The busiest day of Sochi 2014 so far sees Shaun White, one of the world’s biggest winter sporting stars, go for a third consecutive Olympic gold.
It has been an eventful four years for White, regarded as the face of extreme winter sports since he won his second consecutive halfpipe gold at Vancouver 2010.
As well as dominating the famed X Games circuit and playing a cameo role in rock band ‘Bad Things’, he has also been on the wrong side of the law, having been arrested for excessive drunkenness and vandalism in 2012.
The 27-year-old American has a new image going into the Games having cut his distinctive red locks, which gave him the nickname ‘flying tomato’, in favour of a more clean cut look and will be hoping to secure another Olympic title in Sochi.
All but one of the men’s halfpipe gold medals since the event made its debut at Nagano 1998 have been won by the United States and White will be hoping to make its four in a row for the Americans in the final at 5.30pm.
As far as British hopes go on day four, Katie Summerhayes will line-up as a strong contender in the women’s freestyle slopestyle skiing competition, an event – like its snowboarding counterpart – which is making its debut at these Games.
Summerhayes won silver at the last World Cup event before the Olympic Games having made a successful comeback from a succession of injuries, while German Lisa Zimmermann will be in the frame for medals after the withdrawal of X Games champion Tiril Sjastad Christiansen.
The men’s and women’s individual sprints in the cross-country take place and it features Britain’s Andrew Musgrave, who made the front pages of the newspapers in Norway recently when he won the national championships.
In doing so, he remarkably beat a number of top skiers from the world’s leading cross country nation, and will be aiming to reach at least the semi-finals, and possibly beyond, when he competes in the afternoon alongside fellow Brits Andrew Young and Callum Smith.
Great Britain’s men and women curling teams continue their Olympic campaigns with matches against Germany and the United States respectively, the figure skating continues with pairs short program and the.
Also on Tuesday, a small piece of history will be made at the Winter Olympics as, after years of pressure and a high profile legal battle, women will compete for a ski jumping medal for the first time.
Japanese teenager Sara Takanashi will be one of the favourites for gold under the floodlights in what will be an historic occasion at the RusSki Gorki Jumping Center.

Slopestyle skiing makes its Olympic debut, and with its breathtaking array of acrobatic tricks and jumps, it is sure to be a hit.
There is the added bonus of Great Britain having a medal prospect in the shape of teenager Katie Summerhayes, who has secured her Sochi spot despite a run of injuries.
In men’s curling, Great Britain take on Germany, while in the women’s competition, there is an intriguing clash between Sweden and Canada, which is a repeat of the 2010 Winter Olympic gold-medal match, won by the Swedes.

Coverage returns to BBC Two for the rest of the afternoon at 1.00pm as one of the busiest days of the 2014 Winter Olympics continues.
Winter Olympic star Shaun White is bidding for his third-consecutive half-pipe snowboarding crown in Sochi.
The American will be joined in action by Great Britain’s Vancouver veteran Ben Kilner.
The cross-country skiers contest the men’s and women’s individual sprints, an event in which Norway’s Marit Bjoergen won one of her three gold medals in this event in Vancouver.
He will be hungry for more in Sochi , while the home crowd will be hopeful of a Russian winner – Nikita Kriukov is the reigning Olympic and world champion.
South Korea’s Lee Sang-Hwa is the red-hot favourite for gold in the women’s 500m speed skating.
The 24-year-old defending Olympic champion broke the world record for this event four times in 2013, and is one of the sport’s biggest stars.
There is also live action from the curling, where Britain’s women’s team face the USA.
Plus, there is medal news from the women’s luge, where Natalie Geisenberger will be expecting to continue Germany’s fine record in the sport, plus the women’s 10km biathlon pursuit.

A bumper day of live action comes to a spectacular conclusion in Sochi, starring one of the biggest names in Winter Olympic sport – US snowboarder Shaun White.
White is bidding for a third consecutive Olympic snowboarding half-pipe gold in Sochi and it is crunch time in the final.
There is also more live curling from the Ice Cube, while over at the Iceberg, the figure skating pairs event competition gets under way.
Russia have a strong tradition in the sport and world champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov probably represent the host’s best chance of figure skating gold at these Games.
Their biggest rivals are likely to be Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, who won bronze in Vancouver four years ago.
Britain will be represented by Stacey Kemp and David King.
