2021/22 Ashes series to be shown live on BT Sport

BT Sport has retained the rights to show all of Australia international cricket for the next four years, including the 2021/22 Ashes series between Australia and England.

The pay-TV broadcaster has signed a new UK rights deal to broadcast Australia’s men’s and women’s home cricket internationals until 2025, including all five men’s Ashes Tests this winter, plus the Women’s Ashes series in early 2022 and a scheduled men’s ODI and T20I series in late 2022.

The new deal means BT Sport subscribers will be able to watch every ball from two of England’s upcoming overseas Test series, with Joe Root’s men travelling to face the West Indies in late January 2022 for ODI and T20I matches after completing their tour of Australia, followed by a three-Test series in the Caribbean in March.

In addition, BT Sport will also show live coverage of Australia’s men taking on New Zealand and Sri Lanka in the limited overs series, which follow the conclusion of the Ashes series.

Commenting on the deal that keeps the Australian Ashes series on its platforms this winter, Simon Green, head of BT Sport, said:

“We loved bringing the highs, lows and controversy of the Ashes to our viewers in 2017/18 and relish the opportunity to bring our customers all the action from both a men’s and women’s Ashes in 2021/22.

“BT Sport’s cricket content has continued to grow since we signed our first rights deal with Cricket Australia and we are delighted to be able to bringing more world-class men’s and women’s cricket from Australia to fans across the UK.”

As well as the renewed deal with Cricket Australia, BT Sport also has exclusive rights to show West Indies men’s and women’s domestic and international cricket in the Caribbean, with England’s men touring early next year, and New Zealand’s men’s and women’s home internationals.

While the broadcaster will continue to cover Australia’s home internationals, the new deal does not include coverage of the men’s and women’s Big Bash Leagues, with these being sold separately to Sky Sports.

BT Sport took over the rights to Australian cricket from Sky Sports in 2016, covering its first Ashes series a year later.

While BT had its own on-site presentation and commentary team for the 2017/18 Ashes, it is expected that they will take the match coverage provided by host broadcaster Fox Sports this time around, due to the logistical challenges caused by the pandemic, with its own studio team led by Matt Smith and Sir Alastair Cook based in London.
