Channel 5 has secured the rights to broadcast live coverage of the WBO World Super-Featherweight title fight between Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton.
The rescheduled world title showdown will take place at Caesars Bluewaters Dubai on Saturday, 3 April, and Channel 5 will screen two hours of exclusive live free-to-air coverage from 10pm, with the ring-walks for the main event expected shortly after.
Former super-bantamweight and featherweight title-holder Frampton, nicknamed ‘The Jackal’, is bidding to become Northern Ireland’s first three-weight world champion, while Herring is making the third defence of his world title.
Herring won the super-featherweight title in 2019 when he outpointed Masayuki Ito and has since defended it against Lamont Roach and Jonathan Oquendo, however Frampton represents arguably his toughest test to date.
Channel 5’s coverage will be presented from London by Jeanette Kwakye, alongside boxing pundit Steve Bunce and world light-welterweight champion Josh Taylor. Commentary on the fight itself comes from Dave Farrar and Richie Woodhall.
Tweeting about Channel 5’s deal to broadcast the fight, Frampton said:
“Absolutely delighted that my fight will be shown to the masses on free to air TV. It is where the sport of boxing should be shown, accessible to everyone in the country. Having the potential of millions being able to watch me make history is truly special. Thank you @Channel5Sport“
The fight was originally scheduled to take place at London’s Copper Box Arena in late February, but Frampton suffered a hand injury in the build-up. It was also due to be televised by BT Sport, who have shown Frampton’s bouts since he linked up with promoter Frank Warren.
In addition to the Herring/Frampton fight, Channel 5’s programme on the night is also expected to feature delayed coverage of selected bouts from the undercard, including Northern Ireland’s Tyrone McKenna facing Zhankosh Turarov for the WBO Intercontinental super-lightweight title, while American prodigy Keyshawn Davis faces Richman Ashelley.
All of Channel 5’s coverage will be available to watch live online or on-demand via its streaming service My5.
In addition to Channel 5’s free-to-air coverage, the entire Dubai fight night will be available to watch via streaming platform iFL TV via their YouTube channel.
