Eight gold medals are on offer on day two of Sochi 2014 with the pick of the action featuring one of the blue-riband events of the Games.
Alpine Skiing gets underway in spectacular style with the men’s downhill on the challenging Ros Khutor Alpine Resort up in the mountains above the Sochi Olympic Park.
Reigning world champion Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway starts as the big favourite to upgrade the silver he won in Vancouver four years ago to gold this time around.
American skiing star Bode Miller, 2010 bronze medalist in downhill, has strongly criticised the course in the build-up to event but is expected to challenge.
Switzerland’s defending Olympic champion Didier Defago will hope to be in the medals mix but has only finished on the podium in an FIS World Cup event across all disciplines once in the last three years, having won the recent Super-G at Kitzbuehel.
The energetic snowboarding slopestyle competitions continue with the women’s event today with strong British interest once again.
Jenny Jones has been one of the leading professional slopestyle boarders for the past 15 years but the Sochi Games sees the the first time her event has featured in the Olympic programme.
She will be hoping to contend for a top five finish having won a World Cup silver medal earlier this season, despite suffering from concussion towards the end of last year.
Those likely to be challenging for the medals include Switzerland’s Sina Candrian, Canada’s Spencer O’Brien and USA’s Jamie Anderson.
In luge, Germany’s Felix Loch is the firm favourite to defend his Olympic title as the final two runs of the men’s singles takes place, while the dare-devil ski jumping events will award their first gold medal with the men’s normal hill event, where Switzerland’s Simon Ammann will be hoping to add to his collection of four Olympic gold medals.
The team figure skating event, making its debut at these Games, also concludes on Sunday with the men’s and women’s free skates, followed by the ice dancers’ free dance, with host nation Russia, Canada and the United States likely to lead the charge for medals.

A busy morning session on day two of the Winter Olympics in Sochi features one of the highlights of the Games.
The alpine skiing begins in the mountains above Sochi with the blue riband event – the men’s downhill.
The fastest skiers in the world will be vying to add their names to a roll of honour that includes legends such as Jean-Claude Killy and Franz Klammer.
There is also live coverage of the women’s snowboard slopestyle, a new event to the Winter Olympics.
This is an event in which Great Britain’s Jenny Jones – a three-time X Games gold medallist – has real hopes of a medal, providing she can progress from the semi-finals.

Five sports feature in BBC Two’s afternoon programme introduced by Jonathan Edwards.
The team figure skating, which is making its debut at these Games, is into its final stages.
In addition to deciding the inaugural Olympic champions, the competition should provide a few clues about who is in form ahead of the individual events.
Other medals to be decided include the women’s 3,000m speed skating, while endurance and all-round technique will be needed to get on the podium in the men’s skiathlon, a cross country race over 30km, which requires competitors to ski in both styles of the discipline.

The team figure skating reaches its conclusion and it is also the final two runs in the men’s luge as Clare Balding anchors the closing stages of day two in Sochi.
Germany’s Felix Loch is the reigning Olympic champion, but the two men who were on the podium with him four years ago are again likely to be threats to his title.
His team-mate David Moeller and the remarkable Italian Armin Zoeggeler will be hoping to win a medal in luge for the sixth consecutive Olympics.
There is also live ski jumping with the final of the men’s normal hill event.
Switzerland’s Simon Ammann will be hoping to add to his collection of four Olympic gold medals.
However, he is likely to face stiff competition from in-form Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer, the current World Cup champion who won bronze in 2010.
