Alex Scott has been revealed as the new presenter of the BBC’s Football Focus.

The 36-year-old former Arsenal and England full-back, who has been a regular guest on the show for the last few seasons, will take over from Dan Walker who is leaving the show after 12 years as host.

The announcement was made live on-air during a special edition of the programme building up to the 2021 FA Cup Final.

During her distinguished playing career, Scott made more than 200 club appearances, earning 140 caps for her country and represented Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

She becomes the show’s first permanent female host in its 47-year history and will present her first show in August.

Speaking to the BBC Sport website about her new role fronting the corporation’s flagship football magazine show, Scott said:

“When I was a kid, I would never have watched television and thought someone like me could be presenting a programme like Football Focus. For the BBC to trust me with this role and allow me to be my true, authentic self means a lot.

“To say I’m the Football Focus presenter feels surreal. I’ve had some amazing messages and an incredible reaction on social media – I want to thank everyone for their support.

Scott said she had received “amazing messages” from friends and fans, including former Arsenal goalkeeper and Football Focus presenter Bob Wilson, who was the show’s longest serving main presenter between 1974 and 1994.

Since retiring from playing in 2018, she has become a familiar face on televised football, including regular punditry stints for the BBC and Sky Sports.

Away from football, she has also hosted BBC’s The One Show and also took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2019.

Dan Walker, who Scott says has “guided” her throughout her time as a regular Focus guest, will present his final edition fronting the show will air on 22 May. Scott added:

“Dan knew I wanted to be a presenter so he helped hone my skills and allowed me to step out of my ‘pundit’ comfort zone on the show. In fact, everyone around me – from Gabby Logan to Mark Chapman – and so many people behind the scenes have helped me to get to this point. It will never be lost on me that these kind, amazing people within the industry have supported and encouraged me to be the best I can be.

“The first show in August will be exciting and I’m looking forward to it. Of course it’s going to be different but I hope you embrace it and stay with us. I promise you I will bring the best of myself to Football Focus and I hope you enjoy the ride.”
