ITV4 to repeat Brian Moore Meets

ITV4 will repeat four episodes of the ‘Brian Moore Meets’ series this week (18-22 May), featuring interviews with some of the most iconic figures in the world of sport in their heyday.

Presented by the late Brian Moore, ITV Sport’s legendary football presenter and commentator for three decades before his retirement in 1998, the documentary series ran in primetime on ITV between 1979 and 1982 and included special in-depth interviews and behind-the-scenes profiles of the biggest names in sport at that time.

Four of the six original episodes will be rerun on ITV4 across the week of 18-22 May, including interviews with footballer Kevin Keegan, Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda, multiple Grand Slam tennis champion Bjorn Borg and Spanish golfing sensation Seve Ballesteros.

The hour-long programmes, which have been re-versioned to include an introduction by Gabriel Clarke, will air each weeknight at 7pm (except Wednesday).

The first episode on Monday, 18 May, takes a special look at the life of England footballer Kevin Keegan as he tried to conquer European football in general, and Germany in particular, in a programme first broadcast in 1979.

Moore followed Keegan to Hamburg, where he was just starting to win the admiration of his sceptical teammates.

Keegan had also just been crowned European footballer of the year and the ITV cameras revealed how he was ahead of his time in terms of realising his commercial potential, as well as his lofty ambitions after retiring from football.

On Tuesday, Moore interviews with Formula 1 legend Niki Lauda, who survived a horrific life-threatening crash at the infamous Nurburgring circuit in 1976 and returned just three weeks later, only to narrowly miss out on the drivers’ championship to rival James Hunt.

The programme provides a revealing portrait of one of motor racing’s most respected figures, who died last year aged 70.

There is no episode on Wednesday evening, as ITV4 replays England’s clash against the Netherlands as part of its Euro 96 Relived series, a match which Brian Moore commentated on alongside Kevin Keegan.

On Thursday, Brian Moore meets Grand Slam tennis star Bjorn Borg, as he prepared to defend his Wimbledon title for the fifth consecutive year.

The cameras followed him around Europe in 1980 to find out what made him tick, capturing Borg’s glamorous but exhausting lifestyle, as well as revealing how his upbringing helped to mould his ice-cold on-court persona.

The series concludes on Sunday with a classic 1981 interview with golfing legend Seve Ballesteros, who was then at the peak of his powers at the age of 22, having won the Open Championship in 1979 followed by a Masters green jacket in 1980.

Moore travelled to Seve’s home town of Pedrana in Northern Spain to find out about his upbringing and examines his single-minded pursuit of excellence.

All four episodes will be available to watch online via ITV Hub shortly after broadcast.

In addition to repeats of classic ‘Brian Moore Meets’ documentaries, ITV4 will also repeat selected episodes from its ‘Big Match Revisited’ series on Saturday and Sunday mornings, starting on 23 May, featuring classic football matches from the ITV archives.
