The BBC will continue to broadcast a raft of special football programmes this weekend (16-17 May) in the continued absence of the professional game in the UK due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On what would have been the concluding weekend of the Premier League season, Football Focus has special interviews with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Manchester United’s Brandon Williams, in an extended hour-long show from 12pm on BBC One.
The latest World Cup Rewind follows on BBC One at 2.05pm (except for viewers in Wales) and features highlights England’s tense last-16 match against Colombia at Russia 2018, plus the Netherlands’ clash with Argentina in 1998, which was illuminated by a sensational goal from Dennis Bergkamp.
Then in Match of the Day’s traditional Saturday night slot on BBC One, the latest MOTD Top 10 Podcast sees Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright discuss the ten greatest goals of the Premier League era, followed by Match of Their Day, which this week looks back at some classic final day action from both ends of the table.
Then on Sunday afternoon there will be a full replay of the dramatic last 16 encounter between England and Argentina at the 1998 World Cup, via the Red Button and on the BBC Sport website.
Also on the BBC this weekend, viewers in Wales can watch the latest MOTD Wales Classic on Saturday afternoon (also available nationwide on BBC iPlayer).
The 1979 Home Nations Championship clash against Scotland is this week’s classic match, where a hat-trick from legendary striker John Toshack gave the home side a memorable 3-0 victory at Ninian Park.
BBC Scotland will deliver more classic action from the Sportscene archives, including the start of a new series of programmes looking six memorable World Cup matches, starting on Sunday evening with Scotland’s 1974 meeting with Brazil.
Next weekend will be the 1978 game with Netherlands, 1982 tie with USSR, and 1986 match with West Germany, while games against Sweden in 1990 and Brazil in 1998 will follow at the end of the month.
On Friday evening, Aberdeen’s domestic success under Alex Ferguson during the 1980s will be the focus of Sportscene’s Scottish Football Classics.
The programme, which was meant to be broadcast last Sunday, was rescheduled after a BBC News special was broadcast to cover the latest around UK government measures on coronavirus.
