London 2012 Olympics Watch – Friday 3rd August

Get ready for one of the busiest days of the London 2012 Games with 24 sports in action throughout the day, including the beginning of the athletics competition, regarded as the flagship event of every Olympics.

Exactly a week on since the Olympic Stadium staged one of the most memorable opening ceremonies of recent Games, the serious action inside the 80,000-seater venue, as more than 2,000 athletes compete in 47 events over the next 10 days, making athletics the largest single sport at the Games.

British fans will be closely following the fortunes of Jessica Ennis as she begins her quest for Olympic glory in the heptathlon, which opens up proceedings inside London’s Olympic Stadium.

Jessica competes in her opening events, starting with the 100m hurdles at 10.50am and concludes her day with her 200m heat at 8.45pm, with coverage across BBC One and BBC Three. Details of which GB athletes are in action are displayed below in the sport-by-sport guide.

At the velodrome, Geraint Thomas leads the British men’s team pursuiters in another clash with the Australians. Should both make the final, it will be must-watch Olympic television from 6pm on BBC Two. Victoria Pendleton follows in the women’s keirin event.

Rowing’s schedule sees Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins’ event, the double sculls, reach its conclusion just after midday on BBC One, while Alan Campbell will be in the single sculls.

Swimming resumes with more finals from the Aquatics Centre, including Lizzie Simmonds in the 200m backstroke and Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly.

But the star attraction will be Rebecca Adlington defending her 800m freestyle Olympic title. Adlington is more than a second quicker than anyone else in the world this year.

It’s the final day of the archery competition at Lord’s with the men’s individual medal set to be awarded. Great Britain’s remaining representative is Larry Godfrey, who will be aim for a place in the final stages of the tournament and possibly a medal.

At SW19, Andy Murray will look to book his place in Sunday’s gold medal match as he faces 2011 Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals on Centre Court, while Roger Federer will play Juan Martin Del Porto. On the women’s side, Victoria Azarenka meets Serena Williams, and there is all Russian affair in the other semi-final, as Maria Sharapova faces Maria Kirilenko.

Later in the day, Team GB women’s football team will be in quarter-final action against Canada at Coventry Stadium, with Hope Powell’s side yet to concede a goal in the competition so far.

Other Great Britain teams in action include women’s basketball (v France, 8pm), women’s handball (v Angola, 9.30am), men’s hockey (v Pakistan, 4pm), women’s volleyball (v Dominican Republic, 4.45pm), and women’s water polo (v Italy, 6.20pm)

Coverage of day seven of the Games, featuring the men’s individual archery at Lord’s and the opening session of the athletics schedule at the Olympic Stadium. The archery gets under way at 9.00 with the last-16 encounters taking place ahead of this afternoon’s medal-deciding matches.

The attention then shifts to the Olympic Stadium and the start of the athletics programme, which features the 10.00 men’s shot put qualifying round, 10.05 heptathlon 100m hurdles, 10.25 women’s triple jump qualifiers and the 10.40 women’s 100m preliminaries.

Much of the focus will be on Jessica Ennis, as she begins her quest for heptathlon gold with one of her strongest disciplines.

All the action from four rowing finals at Eton Dorney. The schedule features the finals of the 11.30 men’s quadruple sculls, 11.50 men’s pair, 12.10 women’s double sculls and 12.30 men’s single sculls.

Hopes of British success are high in the women’s double sculls, represented by Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins, with Grainger hoping to finally add gold to her collection after winning silver in three consecutive Games.

Wimbledon hosts the semi-finals of the men’s and women’s Olympic singles tournament.

Andy Murray represented Britain’s greatest chance of tennis success heading into these Games after reaching the final of Wimbledon, and he faces Novak Djokovic in the third match on Centre Court.

Cycling

This afternoon’s opening races in the track cycling at the London Velodrome include the women’s Keirin.

Victoria Pendleton is one of the most high-profile members of Team GB and is looking to progress to this evening’s Keirin finals, as she continues her quest to add to the sprint gold she won at the Beijing Games.

The full schedule features the first round of the women’s Keirin from 4.00, with the first-round repechages from 4.45 and second round from 5.45, along with the first round of the men’s team pursuit from 4.15 and women’s team pursuit qualifying from 5.00.

A packed evening of live sport on day seven of the Games, including the first night of athletics disciplines and the latest swimming finals.

The swimming schedule at the Aquatics Centre features the finals of the 7.30 women’s 200m backstroke, 7.38 men’s 100m butterfly, 7.45 women’s 800m freestyle and 8.09 men’s 50m freestyle.

The women’s freestyle represents Britain’s best chance of success, with Rebecca Adlington having qualified for the final as she looks to retain the title she won four years ago in Beijing, having already claimed a bronze medal in this year’s 400m freestyle.

Michael Phelps should be involved in the 100m butterfly, and Lizzie Simmonds, who won silver for Team GB at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, could line-up in the 200m backstroke final.

Athletics coverage at the Olympic Stadium begins with the opening heats in the men’s 1500m from 8.05, followed by the 8.30 men’s shot put final, 8.45 heptathlon 200m and 9.25 women’s 10,000m final. Andy Baddeley and Ross Murray are Britain’s 1500m representatives, while Jessica Ennis continues her quest for heptathlon glory in the fourth of seven disciplines.

The first action of the day on BBC Three comes from the Aquatics Centre, with the heats of the 10.00 women’s 50m freestyle, 10.23 men’s 1500m freestyle, 11.50 women’s 4x100m medley relay and 12.04 men’s 4x100m medley relay.

The Olympic Stadium is the venue for the athletics events, which are round one of the men’s 400m hurdles and the heptathlon high jump, both from 11.15, and the first round of the women’s 400m from 12.00.

Britain’s Dai Greene is the reigning World and Commonwealth champion in the 400m hurdles, and will be looking to safely progress to tomorrow’s semi-finals, while Jessica Ennis continues her heptathlon campaign.

2.00pm-7.00pm – OLYMPICS 2012

Sailing, Archery, Hockey, Football

The men’s individual archery competition at Lord’s continues with the quarter-finals from 2.00, followed by the semi-finals from 2.52, the bronze-medal match at 3.21 and the final at 3.37.

The men’s hockey at the Riverbank Arena gets under way at 4.00, as Great Britain face Pakistan in their latest Pool A fixture, with the third women’s football quarter-final between Brazil and Japan starting at 5.00 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Plus, the sailing regatta continues in Weymouth with the concluding preliminary races in the men’s Finn and Star classes.

7.00pm-11.00pm – OLYMPICS 2012

Coverage of this evening’s athletics programme, the penultimate evening of swimming and the concluding women’s football quarter-final.

The Olympic Stadium is the first venue for the heptathlon shot put from 7.00, with Jessica Ennis continuing her quest for gold, and the first round of the women’s 100m from 7.05.

The football kicks off at 7.30 at the City of Coventry Stadium, and features Great Britain v Canada.
