London 2012 Olympics Watch – Sat 28th July

0

After all the hype and expection, the Olympic Games get under way, with 302 gold medals at stake over the next sixteen days of competition.

Nineteen sports will begin their London Olympic campaigns, with the pick of the action being the men’s road race.

Can Mark Cavendish repeat his success last week on the Champs-Elysees and win Great Britain’s first gold medal of London 2012 on the Mall?

In the pool, Scotland’s Hannah Miley, 22, is Britain’s other big medal hope on day one in the women’s 400m Individual Medley.

She enters this event as the world silver medallist and is ranked third-fastest in the world this year, behind Elizabeth Beisel of the United States and China’s Zheng Rong Rong.

One of the highlights of the opening day at the Aquatics centre will be the battle between fierce rivals Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, who will battle for supremacy in the 400m Individual Medley.

Elsewhere, watch out for Team GB rowing duo Heather Stanning and Helen Glover in the women’s pair, who will be among the first to race as the Olympic rowing events begin at Eton Dorney.

Wherever you look there will be plenty of British interest, including the men’s archery team event at Lord’s, and GB table tennis star Paul Drinkhall in first round action in the men’s singles competition.

London’s Olympic Tennis tournament begins at Wimbledon, with GB’s Anne Keothavong in action against Caroline Wozniacki, while Jamie and Andy Murray will play in the first round of the doubles competition.

Plus, Great Britain women’s basketball, football, volleyball and handball will all be in action.

All the action is live on the BBC, and you can make your choice of Olympic viewing by pressing the Red Button on your digital remote, or by accessing the BBC’s Olympics channels or the BBC Sport website.

You can follow all the action from the first day of full competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games across the BBC. Details below:
