0

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics reaches its eleventh day of competition on Tuesday and BBC Sport and Eurosport will have extensive round-the-clock coverage from Japan.

SOTB’s Olympics TV guides will take you through all the key action and list the must-see moments every day throughout the Games.

A total of 21 Olympic sporting disciplines are in action on Tuesday and 26 gold medals are set to be won. Here is a summary of the best action to look out for:

ATHLETICS: Among the many highlights on the fifth day of action inside the Olympic Stadium is the women’s 200m final, although it will take place without Britain’s reigning world champion Dina Asher-Smith, who withdrew due to injury.

Despite her absence, it promises to be an exciting race, with Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah looking to secure the sprint double against compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shauna Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas and Gabby Thomas of the United States, who is the fastest woman over 200m in 2021.

Another race to watch out for is the men’s 400m hurdles, which features Norwegian superstar Karsten Warholm, who is the world record-holder in the event, as well as the reigning world champion from Doha.

TRACK CYCLING: It could be an historic night at the velodrome as Laura and Jason Kenny go in the women’s team pursuit and men’s team sprint respectively.

Jason has been part of the winning GB sprint team at every Olympics since 2008, while Laura won the team pursuit in London and Rio. Can they continue their run of golden success?

SAILING: The rescheduled women’s 49er FX and men’s 49er medal races are due to take place on Tuesday, having been cancelled on Monday due to light winds. They feature GB’s Saskia Tidey and Charlotte Dobson, and Stuart Bithell and Dylan Fletcher respectively. Bithell and Fletcher are world champions in this class from 2017.

Following those events, it will be medal races in the Finn class and mixed Nacra 17 class. Britain’s Giles Scott, finn champion in Rio five years ago, will look to defend his Finn title, while in the mixed Nacra 17 class, GB are represented by 2020 world champions John Gimson and Anna Burnet.

DIVING: It’s the semi-finals and final of the men’s 3m springboard competition in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, featuring Britain’s Jack Laugher, who won silver in this event at Rio 2016 and a bronze at the 2019 World Championships.

BOXING: The first boxing medals of the Games will be won on day 11 and there is British interest in the men’s welterweight gold medal bout as Pat McCormack, who won silver at the 2019 world championships, takes on Cuba’s Roniel Iglesias.

GYMNASTICS: After a thrilling nine days of action inside the Ariake Centre, it’s the final day of competition in Artistic Gymnastics. After withdrawing from many of her events for mental health reasons, Simone Biles is set to compete in the women’s beam final, which represents the American’s last chance to claim an individual medal at the Tokyo Games.

Elsewhere, Great Britain’s Joe Fraser, who was world champion on parallel bars in 2019, is set to contend for the medals on this apparatus.

SPORT CLIMBING: The sport makes its Olympic debut on Tuesday with qualification for the men’s combined event, which features three separate disciplines – speed climbing, bouldering and lead climbing.

LIVE ATHLETICS, DIVING, CANOE SPRINT
Presenter: JJ Chalmers

The early athletics action includes the men’s 400m hurdles and women’s long jump finals, while Olympic diving champion Jack Laugher competes in the springboard semi-final.

The men’s 400m hurdles promises to be a highlight of the Games, with Norway’s world champion Karsten Warholm and main rivals Rai Benjamin and Abderrahman Samba pushing each other to new heights in recent seasons. In the women’s long jump, the dominance of Germany’s Malaika Mihambo could come under threat, with African record holder Esme Brume and Britain’s Lorraine Ugen among a group of jumpers in top form this season.

Laugher became Britain’s first Olympic diving champion when he won the synchronised event with Chris Mears in 2016. He also gained silver in the individual event, for which he is now seeking safe passage to the final this morning.

Reigning Olympic champions Jack Laugher and Giles Scott are among the Brits hoping to be in medal contention again as the games continue in Tokyo.

Scott is defending his title in sailing’s finn class, which Britain have won at every Olympics this century. He’s not the only British sailor with podium aspirations on day 11 – it’s also the medal race in the mixed Nacra 17, in which John Gimson and Anna Burnet won the 2020 world title.

Laugher’s historic diving gold five years ago came in the synchronised 3m springboard with Chris Mears, but he also earned individual silver in Rio and should be in contention again here. His main opposition, as ever, is likely to come from China, with Xie Siyi winner of back-to-back world titles.

In the Velodrome, Great Britain continue their defence of the men’s and women’s team pursuit titles, while six-time Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny competes in the men’s team sprint opening rounds.

NOTE: Between 6am and 9am during Olympic Breakfast, there will be hourly BBC national news updates.

Hopes are high for more British success, starting with artistic gymnastics, boxing and track cycling finals.

The last three apparatus finals of these Olympics are decided in gymnastics, including the men’s parallel bars, in which Britain’s Joe Fraser is the reigning world champion. Simone Biles had to settle for bronze on the beam at Rio 2016, but she remains the gold standard in the sport.

It has been a relatively fallow few years for Britain’s cyclists at major events, but they hope to peak as always at the Olympics, and today’s men’s team sprint and women’s team pursuit finals could be an opportunity for Jason and Laura Kenny to add to their vast medal collection. Great Britain are the defending champions in both events.

In boxing, it’s the men’s welterweight gold-medal bout, with Britain’s world silver medallist Pat McCormack taking on Cuba’s Roniel Iglesias for Olympic gold.

NOTE: Coverage switches to BBC Two for 45 minutes at 12pm.
