Sky Sports to show Extreme E live in 2021

Sky Sports has announced that it will show every round of the inaugural Extreme E season live in 2021 after signing a one-year agreement.

The new off-road series will see electric SUV cars race in five remote locations around the world that are being impacted by climate change, and team owners include Formula 1 world champions Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Sky Sports will broadcast live coverage all five Extreme E X-Prix events in 2021, with the BBC also simulcasting live coverage on the BBC Sport website and BBC iPlayer as part of a rights deal announced in early 2020.

The 2021 series starts with the Desert X Prix on 3-4 April, with Sky’s coverage details and the on-air presenting team to be announced in due course.

Highlighting a variety of issues around the climate crisis through a unique motorsport adventure, Extreme E will visit arctic, desert, rainforest, glacier and coastal territories.

Both Sky and Extreme E say they share “many common goals” on the issues of sustainability and climate change.

The pay-TV broadcaster has outlined its ambition to become net zero carbon by 2030, as well as launched a ‘Season of Sustainability’ campaign, which aims to talk directly to sports fans encouraging them to make simple, everyday changes to reduce their carbon footprint as part of the Sky Zero campaign.

Extreme E also promotes inclusion in sport with all teams featuring a male and female driver – a first for motorsport.

There are nine teams signed up for the series, including seven-time F1 champion Hamilton’s Team X44.

Nine-time world rally champion Sebastian Loeb will drive for Hamilton’s team during Extreme E’s debut season, while other high-profile racing stars involved include rally legend Carlos Sainz and W Series champion Jamie Chadwick.

Extreme E joins Sky Sports’ existing motorsport portfolio which is headlined by extensive live coverage of Formula 1, as well as support categories Formula 2 and Formula 3.
