In the absence of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, BBC Sport will broadcast highlights of some of the best action of recent Games with 12 days of dedicated Olympics programming this July.

Starting on 14 July, Olympics Rewind will take a look back at some of the greatest moments from the last three Olympics games.

The daily highlights shows will revisit opening and closing ceremonies, incredible sporting moments and the best of Britain’s Olympic achievements.

Usain Bolt’s stunning 100m and 200m world records and multiple British gold medals for the likes of Rebecca Adlington and Chris Hoy will feature in Olympics Rewind: Beijing 2008.

Narrated by Sue Barker, the Beijing 2008 highlights shows will run from 14-16 July, airing each afternoon on BBC Two.

This will be followed over the weekend of 18-19 July by Olympics Rewind: London 2012, also presented by Sue Barker, looking back at the standout moments from one of the most memorable events in British sporting history.

From the six gold medals of an incredible Super Saturday, including the triple athletics triumph of Jessica Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford, to Andy Murray beating Roger Federer to win tennis gold, the London 2012 offering will make up over seven hours of highlights.

Three programmes will be shown on BBC TV, with Saturday’s highlights running from 1.15pm to 4.45pm, whilst Sunday’s bumper four-hour shows across BBC One and BBC Two airs from 2pm.

Alongside the London 2012 sporting highlights, there will be special shows dedicated to the 2012 Torch Relay and Opening Ceremony on 17 July, with the latter as part of a special director’s cut, featuring extended highlights from Danny Boyle’s extraordinary opening ceremony.

With unforgettable moments like Her Majesty parachuting into the stadium with James Bond and Mr Bean’s live performance with the London Symphony Orchestra, this Friday night offering should make for nostalgic and uplifting viewing.

Then from 20-24 July, Dan Walker presents Olympics Rewind: Rio 2016, featuring highlights of Britain’s most successful Games since 1908, with an amazing 67 medals, including gold medals for the likes of Adam Peaty, Mo Farah, Bradley Wiggins, Helen Glover, Max Whitlock, Nicola Adams and many more.

Closing the BBC’s Olympics schedule will be Britain’s Greatest Olympic Moments, airing on Saturday, 25 July at 1.15pm on BBC One.

Presented by Clare Balding and Gabby Logan, the programme will countdown a top 25 of British Olympic moments from the summer games.

The BBC Sport website will also invite the public to have their say on their own favourite Olympic moments with a vote to decide who comes out on top.

Throughout the 12 days of programming, viewers will also be able to watch along and re-live some key moments from Beijing, London and Rio through the eyes of some of our greatest Olympians.

Sir Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington, Max Whitlock, the 2016 Team GB women’s hockey gold medallists and more yet to be announced British athletes will feature within our ‘Olympic Secrets’ shows on BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and BBC Red Button, as well as a special programme bringing together Olympic 400m legends Michael Johnson and Wayde van Niekerk.

Commenting on the BBC’s special Olympics programming this summer, director of sport Barbara Slater said:

“In the absence of this summer’s postponed Olympics in Tokyo, Olympics Rewind will allow fans to relive Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

“Forming a fortnight of entertainment and nostalgia, the programming will look back on incredible accomplishments, record breaking performances and huge British gold medal hauls from each Olympic Games.”

Olympics Rewind is part of the BBC’s summer of classic sporting highlights, which have been added to its schedules in the wake of many of this year’s major sporting events being postponed or cancelled, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In June, the BBC aired classic European Football Championship matches as part of its Euros Rewind series, which was followed by classic tennis action from Wimbledon.
