The BBC will devote its football programming to classic FA Cup Final action this weekend (23-24 May) featuring a special pop-up channel via the Red Button and BBC iPlayer on Saturday.
On what would have been FA Cup final day, BBC One will broadcast FA Cup-themed editions of Football Focus, MOTD Top 10 Podcast and Match of Their Day, as well as a 90-minute FA Cup Rewind on Saturday afternoon looking back at classic finals over the years, plus reflections on other iconic moments from the world’s most famous domestic cup competition.
From 9am to 7.40pm on Saturday, BBC Red Button will be dedicated entirely to showing classic FA Cup Final day action and special programmes, starting with highlights of the 1973 final between Sunderland and Leeds United.
Users of the BBC Sport website were asked to pick two classic finals to relive in full via the pop-up FA Cup channel on the Red Button and BBC iPlayer.
Fans voted overwhelmingly for Steven Gerrard’s virtuoso performance for Liverpool to deny West Ham in 2006, followed by Arsenal’s dramatic victory over Manchester United in 1979 in second place.
Both of these matches will be replayed in full on BBC Red Button, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, starting with the 1979 final at 10am, with the 2006 final following at 4.45pm.
Other programmes on the Red Button include a repeat of the FA Cup’s 50 Greatest Moments, presented by Rio Ferdinand and Helen Skelton (first broadcast on BBC Three in Christmas 2014), which will also be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday evening.
In Match of the Day’s traditional Saturday night slot on BBC One, the latest MOTD Top 10 Podcast sees Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright discuss the ten greatest FA Cup Final moments, followed by Match of Their Day, which this week features seven-time FA Cup winner Ashley Cole, who relives some of the best cup finals he played in with Arsenal and Chelsea.
Away from the FA Cup, on Sunday afternoon there will be a full replay of the memorable quarter-final encounter between England and Canada at the 2015 Women’s World Cup via the Red Button and on the BBC Sport website, as part of a special ‘QuaranTeam Commentary’ featuring Lionesses Alex Scott, Jill Scott, Karen Carney and Lucy Bronze.
BBC Scotland will broadcast three memorable World Cup matches featuring Scotland over the course of the weekend.
The FIFA World Cup Rewind series continues on Friday with the 1978 meeting against the Netherlands, followed on Saturday by the 1982 tie with USSR and the 1986 match against West Germany on Sunday.
