BT Sport is to look back at last season’s extraordinary UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions for a new series of live ‘Throwback’ programmes.
In the absence of live matches due to the coronavirus pandemic, the broadcaster will now fill its midweek schedules with two-hour specials every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night, featuring extended highlights of selected matches from the 2018/19 knockout stages, exactly one-year on from when they were played.
The ‘Champions League Throwback’ shows will be presented by Jake Humphrey and feature live interviews with players involved in the matches, as well as analysis and discussion with selected BT Sport pundits, including Rio Ferdinand, with Matt Smith and Robbie Savage hosting the ‘Europa League Throwback’ shows.
Viewers can also interact with the live programmes via social media, using the hashtags #UCLThrowbacks and #UELThrowbacks.
BT Sport’s first ‘Throwback’ will air on Tuesday, 7 April at 8pm, which will look back at the first leg of last season’s extraordinary quarter-final clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.
This will be followed on Wednesday by Manchester United’s clash against Barcelona, while Thursday’s Europa League Throwback will focus on Arsenal’s tie against Napoli.
Further ‘Throwbacks’ will follow over the next few weeks, which feature some of the most memorable clashes in the history of both the Champions League and Europa League, in what was one of the most successful European campaigns for British clubs.
All matches from UEFA’s premier club competitions have been suspended “until further notice” because of the global coronavirus pandemic.
The ‘Throwback’ series is the latest innovation by BT Sport as it looks to continue broadcasting new programmes amidst the current crisis.
BT Sport has already broadcast special editions of some of its flagship shows, including Early Kick-Off, Rugby Tonight and MotoGP, all of which have been made by an entirely remote production operation, instead of being produced and filmed at BT Sport’s regular studios at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.
All members of production staff on each show work from their respective homes or, if that isn’t possible, from their local office base, with the necessary equipment being supplied and installed by outside broadcast facilities companies including Timeline.
On-screen presenters and contributors have been broadcasting from their own homes, all connected to the production teams by broadband or over the 4G mobile network.
Other programmes to come from BT Sport include ‘The Football’s Not On’, a spin-off of the channel’s regular football comedy show ‘The Football’s On’, presented by Ian Stone, which will look at “the funny side to missing the beautiful game. Guests, songs and pranks will keep spirits up until football returns”.
Details and broadcast times for the Champions League and Europa League Throwbacks on BT Sport can be found below (schedule subject to change).
An overview of all major UK-televised sporting events that have been postponed, cancelled or rescheduled, as well as those which are still due to be staged, can be found via SOTB’s dedicated coronavirus webpage – sotb.in/coronavirus.
