Coronavirus: How it is affecting televised sport

0

The 2020 sporting calendar has been greatly affected by the coronavirus outbreak as elite matches and events across the UK and worldwide have been postponed, cancelled or rescheduled.

As the World Health Organisation declares Europe the new ‘epicentre’ for the coronavirus, Sport On The Box presents a complete and up-to-date overview of all of the key UK-televised sporting events affected.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralaympic Games are the biggest sporting events of the year to be postponed because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

The organisers, International Olympic Committee and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to the delay, confirming that they must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021.

UEFA Euro 2020 has also been postponed by one year until 2021 because of the pandemic, with European football’s governing body making the decision during an emergency video conference involving major stakeholders.

All Premier League, EFL, FA Cup, Women’s Super League and England international matches have been suspended until at least 30 April due to the threat of the coronavirus, while all professional football in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland has been suspended until further notice, in the wake of the crisis.

The UEFA Champions League and Europa League seasons has also been halted, with both finals postponed, while major European leagues, including La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 and Bundesliga are all suspended.

A number of major international events were initially forced in postponement, including England’s Test series in Sri Lanka, golf’s Masters Tournament and PGA Tour, ATP, WTA and French Open tennis, rugby union’s Six Nations and PRO14, Formula 1, the London Marathon and all major sport in the United States, including the NBA, NHL, MLB and MLS.

Further suspensions now include all European and English domestic rugby union, Vanarama National League football and Super League, as well as British sporting institutions, including Wimbledon, Grand National and the Boat Race, have joined the ever-growing list of future events being cancelled.

The mass postponement of sport due to the pandemic has left a huge gap in all UK broadcasters’ schedules over the coming weeks, with many of these being filled by any live sport which does take place, match replays and documentaries.

Some pay-TV sports broadcasters, including Sky Sports, are giving customers the option to pause their subscription packages until regular live sports coverage resumes.

Commenting on the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on its schedules, Sky Sports managing director Rob Webster said:

“Sky Sports is working closely with all our partners to better understand the impact on the annual sporting calendar.

“We recognise that it is a fast-moving situation and we are working at speed to ensure we continue to deliver for all of our customers. A number of sporting events have been postponed, but not cancelled, so we expect to be able to show these when they are rescheduled.

“Therefore, our live schedule is likely to look different for a period of time. As more information becomes available, we will continue to provide updates to all of our customers.”

In a statement, a spokesman for BT said:

“We apologise to customers about the changes to the BT Sport schedule this month due to the impact of Covid-19.

“The situation is evolving rapidly and we are working with the leagues to continue to broadcast live sport wherever possible and broadcast games when they are rescheduled over the coming months.

“We will continue to broadcast a wide range of BT Sport content including films and documentaries and we will update our customers as we have a clearer view of the remainder of the season.”

Full details of postponed, cancelled or rescheduled sporting events, as well as those which are still due to be staged, can be found below shortly.
