Sky Sports and BT Sport have revealed which Barclays Premier League games they have chosen to broadcast live in May as the season reaches a nail-biting climax for those at the top and bottom of England’s top flight.
As the Premier League season nears its conclusion, both broadcasters, who recently sealed a eye-watering £5bn deal to retain live rights to 2019, will be the place for armchair fans to see all the stories and watch the biggest games, 12 of which will be shown on Sky while another three will be broadcast by BT.
Chelsea’s home match with Liverpool and Arsenal’s trip to Manchester United are among the live matches that have been selected for live broadcast across the first three matchweeks of May, up until the final day of the season on May 24, when all matches will kick off at the same time.
Sky Sports will be the only place to see the Premier League title race reach its climax, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United live every weekend in the run-up to the last day of the season.
The broadcaster has added 13 fixtures in May to its bumper schedule of Premier League matches, with at least four matches a week and a current top-five side featuring in every game.
Sky subscribers will enjoy more big head-to-heads as the top-flight tussle nears its conclusion, with Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool on May 10 and Arsenal’s trip to Old Trafford one week later both newly added to the bill.
Then on the final day of the season on Sunday, May 24, Sky Sports will be the only broadcaster showing live matches, with title-deciding games set to be selected.
Viewers of BT Sport will see the spotlight focus on the Barclays Premier League relegation issues with exclusively live games in May kicking off with Leicester City v Newcastle United.
The East Midlands side will be battling against the Magpies at the King Power Stadium on May 2, as they hope to stay in the Premier League for a second season, having won the Championship last year.
BT Sport will show Everton at Goodison Park on May 9 in their match against strugglers Sunderland, who will be hoping to beat the drop with manager Dick Advocaat now in charge.
The network’s coverage of the final month of the season will also see European competition chasing Southampton take on Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa on May 16.
Following the culmination of the 2014/15 Premier League season, BT Sport will also show the FA Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday, May 30. The match will feature two of the five remaining sides, Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Reading.
The 2014/15 season marks the second year of both broadcaster’s three-year multi-billion pound TV deal with the Premier League, with Sky again screening 116 live games from England’s top flight and BT showcasing 38 live matches during the course of the season.
BSkyB paid £2.3 billion for 116 live Premier League games for three years from 2013-2016, including 20 first picks from the 38 rounds of matches, while BT paid £758 million for 38 games, including 18 first picks, although Sky gets to choose when it wants to exercise its first pick choices.
Under thenext live TV deal starting in 2016/17, 168 games per season will be broadcast across both Sky Sports and BT, with Sky having paid £4.2bn for five packages to show 126 games per season, while BT will show 42 games, most of which will be shown on Saturday tea-time.
