Seven British teams will discover their fate for the knockout stages of the Europe’s premier club competitions on Monday as the draws are made for UEFA Champions League round of 16 and UEFA Europa League round of 32, live on Sky Sports and British Eurosport.
The three remaining British teams in the UEFA Champions League last 16 would all prefer to avoid Europe’s elite in the last 16, though Arsenal and Man City, who finished runners-up in their respective groups, are both unseeded and could face the likes of Barcelona or defending champions Real Madrid.
After winning their group, Chelsea look set to be dealt a kinder fate, but could still be drawn against Italian champions Juventus or Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Paris Saint-Germain.
The draw for the last 16 features two seeding pots – one consisting of group winners and the other of runners-up – though no team can play a club from their group or any side from their own country.
Sky Sports News HQ will be screening live coverage of the draw ceremony from UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, where Rob Wotton hosts a special edition of the channel’s Morning View programme from 10.00am, where he will be joined in the studio by a variety of special guests.
British Eurosport also has full live coverage of the draw at 11.0am, while live streaming and updates from the proceedings will be available via the official UEFA website – UEFA.com.
The draw will be conducted by UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino and UEFA director of competitions Giorgio Marchetti, assisted by final ambassador and former Germany striker Karl-Heinz Riedle.
Alongside the Champions League draw, the UEFA Europa League round of 32 draw will also be made shortly afterwards, which will be shown live in full on British Eurosport, with updates on Sky Sports News HQ.
Everton, Tottenham and Celtic all progressed through their respective Europa League groups and will be joined by Liverpool who were eliminated from the Champions League, though intriguingly, Everton could possibly be drawn against Celtic, setting up another ‘Battle of Britain’ clash.
Seventeen different nations will be represented when the last 32 draw is made, with the 12 group winners and four best third-ranked teams in the Champions League all seeded. They are drawn against the 12 group runners-up and remaining Champions League sides.
This season’s UEFA Champions League, which resumes on February 17-18, is being shown across ITV and Sky Sports, with ITV screening the first pick of Tuesday’s matches, while Sky Sports will screen every other match on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Both broadcasters, who have shared coverage of the competition since 2003, are in the final season covering live matches from Europe’s premier club competition before the rights pass over to BT Sport from 2015/16.
In the Europa League, ITV and BT Sport share the rights, with ITV again screening first and second pick matches from the knockout stages, including both semi-finals and the final exclusively live.
