After a scorching opening day in Scotland across a variety of sports, 22 more Commonwealth gold medals will be won on day two of Glasgow 2014, live on BBC One, BBC Three and BBC Red Button.
More exciting action comes today from a variety of sports, headlined by track cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and swimming at the Tollcross Centre, with highly competitive fields in both men’s and women’s events.
TRACK CYCLING: World champion Joanna Rowsell and British Olympic champion Jason Kenny will be among the Home Nations’ cycling stars aiming to progress into today’s final, in which both represent England.
Rowsell will be the favourite in the women’s 3,000m individual pursuit, though Canada and Australia will be well represented and Scotland’s Katie Archibald, who was part of the successful team pursuit squad at this year’s world championships in Colombia, has a strong shot at a medal, as does Elinor Barker for Wales.
Kenny will be part of a strong England squad taking part on the track, with competitors from Australia likely to be their main rivals, and it was one of those Australians, Shane Perkins, who won this event four years ago in Delhi.
SWIMMING: In front of a raucous home crowd inside the Tollcross Centre, there will be another chance to see Glasgow 2014 poster boy Michael Jamieson in the men’s 100m breaststroke, with a strong chance that he will progress through to the final later in the evening.
But tonight’s finals could all be about the Australian swimmers, with many strong names likely to figure for medals and make their mark on the Glasgow Games.
Jamieson’s Australian rivals in men’s 100m backstroke include Mitchell Larkin and Ben Treffers, both in the world’s top 10, while England’s Chris Walker-Hebborn hoping to reach the podium, while the Aussies are also the favourites on paper for the men’s 200m freestyle, though defending Commonwealth champion Robbie Renwick returns for Scotland.
The women’s 50m breaststroke, an event dominated at international level by Devon-trained Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte, will be a chance for Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson, who was one of just three non-track-and-field athletes in her country’s 50-strong squad for London 2012, to shine and she faces Australia’s Leiston Pickett and England’s Sophie Taylor.
Elsewhere, Fran Halsall for England and Jemma Lowe for Wales are likely to figure in the women’s 100m butterfly, while few will look past the Australians for the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
SHOOTING: A potential story of the Glasgow Games could come at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre in Carnoustie as 17-year-old English shooter Amber Hill competes in the women’s skeet competition.
Major shooting events are rarely staged in the UK, so the Commonwealth Games will be one of Hill’s biggest events ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics, though she has already made her mark on the sport in a very short career so far, having won a senior World Cup event aged just 15 and has already equalled world records in her sport.
OTHER SPORT: The bell will ring for the first time in Glasgow 2014’s boxing competition today as the men’s preliminaries begin in the heavyweight and super-heavyweight divisions.
There is a big Home Nations clash in netball as England meet Wales at the SECC, The Welsh and Scottish men’s hockey teams are also in action against India and South Africa respectively, while the Scottish women take on Malaysia and the Welsh women play Australia.
BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and Red Button will have all the action covered, with multiple live streams available online, connected TVs, mobiles, tablets and the BBC Sport app.
