Scotland’s 11-day sporting party finally commences as the city of Glasgow and the whole of the UK embraces the first day of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, live on BBC One and BBC Three.
Following a colourful Opening Ceremony at Celtic Park the night before, the sporting action comes thick and fast on the opening day of competition as 12 sports get their programmes underway, with strong chances of a gold medal in the pool for one of the host nation’s biggest sporting stars – Michael Jamieson (above).
He and many more of the world’s finest sportsmen and women descend on Glasgow to compete in what is widely known as the ‘Friendly Games’, though the sporting competition will certainly be serious among all 17 sporting disciplines that make up Scotland’s biggest ever multi-sport festival.
Whilst the evening swimming finals will likely dominate the host nation’s attention, there will be an early chance to see some medals for the English team with Olympic medallists Alistair and Jonny Brownlee going for glory in the triathlon.
The Home Nations will also fancy their chances in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in the opening sessions of the track cycling programme, with 2012 Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins leading the English charge.
SWIMMING: Starting in the pool, hopes are high that Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson will win Scotland’s first gold medal of their home Games inside the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
Team GB’s best performing swimmer at the London 2012 Olympics will go in the men’s 200m breaststroke. The Scottish 25-year-old is 2014’s fastest Commonwealth swimmer in this event, but Australia’s Christian Sprenger could be his biggest threat and will want to spoil the host’s party on the opening night.
Meanwhile, Jamieson’s Scotland team-mate Hannah Miley defends her Commonwealth 400m medley title, while all four home nations will be represented in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, with Australia and Canada will be among the favourites for medals.
TRIATHLON: The first of 20 Commonwealth gold medals to be won at Glasgow 2014 will come in the triathlon events, held in Strathclyde Country Park.
Both the men’s and women’s races promise exciting battles packed with talent from the Home Nations, including Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee and brother Jonny.
Dominant in world triathlon for several years, the Brownlee brothers have looked somewhat off the pace in 2014 but will, regardless, start as favourites for England in the men’s race, though South Africa’s Richard Murray, hovering around the top three in the world rankings, should also challenge.
In the women’s race, world champion Non Stanford is missing through injury, as is Welsh compatriot Helen Jenkins, herself a former two-time world champion, while Australian Olympians Emma Moffatt and Emma Jackson each have top-10 World Series finishes to their name this season and will also be targeting medals.
TRACK CYCLING: The Siberian pine boards of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will thrum for the first time at Glasgow 2014 with two sessions on day one.
The men’s team pursuit is the final event of the afternoon. British riders have grown in prominence in this four-person event, winning bronze in 2000, silver in 2004 and gold in 2008 and 2012.
Dominance has been absent in Commonwealth competition however, with settled British teams broken up to compete as individual Home Nations, with London 2012’s winning team being made up of a Welshman, two Englishmen and a Manxman.
New Zealand and Track World Championship winners Australia will be itching to pick apart any disrupted units, while the first day also comes with a Commonwealth first as paracycling makes its debut Commonwealth Games appearance at Glasgow 2014.
Partially sighted Scottish cyclist Aileen McGlynn and her Tandem teammate Louis Haston will be looking to give the hosts a strong start, with McGlynn having won medals in the past three Paralympic Games.
OTHER EVENTS: From the precision of Lawn Bowls to the combat of Judo and the grace and beauty of rhythmic gymnastics, there are many other must-see sports in action across Glasgow, including the Home Nation’s hockey, netball and badminton teams, plus the opening rounds of the men’s and women’s singles in squash, featuring England’s world champion Nick Matthew.
BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and Red Button will have all the action covered, with multiple live streams available online, connected TVs, mobiles, tablets and the BBC Sport app.

In what promises to be a big night in the pool as the first medals are handed out at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
This upgraded venue will also host next year’s world championships and tonight will see semi-finals in four disciplines as well as the first medals decided, including in the men’s 400m freestyle and 200m breaststroke, and women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Australia were clearly the dominant force in the pool four years ago in Delhi, with England a distant second, and Scotland winning just two swimming golds.
The home crowd should have a major contender to cheer on this evening though, provided Michael Jamieson made it through this morning’s qualifiers in the 200m breaststroke.
Jamieson was born in Glasgow and won the silver medal in this discipline in 2010, a feat which he emulated two years later at the London Olympics.

The weightlifting takes place at Clyde Auditorium and features the final of the men’s 56kg category, and the rhythmic gymnastics at The Hydro will see the champions crowned in the women’s team final.
