Glasgow 2014 Watch: Day 3 on BBC Sport – TV Guide

Another packed programme of events are served up in Glasgow on day three of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and you can follow all the action throughout the day across BBC One, BBC Three and BBC Red Button.

Indeed the first Saturday of Glasgow 2014 is the busiest day of the entire Games with no less than 149 events from 15 sports taking place across the city, including the start of the two-day rugby sevens competition and the inaugural mixed team triathlon relay, amongst many other top events.

TRIATHLON: England will be gunning for a clean sweep of the triathlon medals today as they lead the field in the mixed relay, a new event for the Games, at Strathclyde County Park.

Featuring national teams of two men and two women, the athletes will still be tested to the full by the 400m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run which each of them must complete, especially as many of them will have been competing in the individual races on Thursday.

The mixed-gender format leads to some exciting match-ups, for example pitting top Welsh women against England’s Brownlee brothers, with Alastair and Jonny aiming to follow up their gold and silver medals on the opening day in the individual race with team success on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the field, Andrea Hewitt led a strong New Zealand team to second place behind Germany at the last mixed relay world championships, with the same quartet named in the Kiwi squad for the Commonwealth Games, while Australia and Canada are also expected to challenge.

SWIMMING: The men’s butterfly race should involve Chad Le Clos, who became one of the global stars of the sport with his gold and silver medals at London 2012, and the South African also claimed five medals when the Commonwealth Games were held four years ago in India.

The South African produced a stunning performance at London 2012 to claim gold in the event ahead of Michael Phelps, with his dad’s post-race interview garnering almost as much global attention.

Le Clos was just 20 at the time and has since gone on to win double gold at last year’s World Championships in Barcelona. He is the year’s world-leading athlete over the distance and hot favourite to successfully defend his title.

There will also be plenty of interest for the home nations in the pool, notably in the women’s 50m freestyle, which should feature England’s Fran Halsall, who already has seven Commonwealth medals to her name, including a silver in this discipline in 2010.

JUDO: Glasgow marks the return of judo to the Commonwealth Games schedule for the first time in 12 years and after plenty of medal success for the Home Nations so far, Saturday sees two of the biggest British names in action.

Euan Burton has been a fixture for the past decade and Glasgow 2014 will be the Scot’s swansong, competing in the men’s -100kg category. He also serves as a coach for the Scottish team.

Burton’s wife Gemma Gibbons, who also fights on Saturday for England in the women’s -78kg event, won a memorable silver medal at London 2012 and married Burton a year later, and this will be the first time since they met that the two have competed for their respective home nations rather than GB.

RUGBY SEVENS: The seven-a-side version of rugby union makes its bow at Ibrox as the two-day tournament gets underway at the home of Rangers Football Club with the pool stage matches.

This is the fifth time the sport, now an Olympic sport from 2016, has featured in a Commonwealth Games, and on all four previous occasions it has been New Zealand who have come out on top, with Australia the runners-up four years ago.

TRACK CYCLING: In the absence of Mark Cavendish, the Isle of Man’s hopes of success in cycling come from his team-mate Jonny Bellis, who hopes to complete a remarkable recovery by contesting the men’s points race.

Bellis, 25, spent a month in a coma after being knocked from a scooter while training abroad in 2009, with doctors fearing he would be paralysed, yet, 10 months after the crash, he took his first tentative ride back on a bike and made his pro cycling comeback in 2010

Northern Ireland’s Martyn Irvine is also expected to take part in the points race, though Sunday’s scratch race, in which Irvine won the 2013 world title and silver a year later, is his preferred track event.

WEIGHTLIFTING: England’s Zoe Smith, winner of Commonwealth weightlifting bronze in Delhi four years ago, returns to competition in Glasgow having almost quit the sport following a series of injuries last year.

Smith faces Welsh Commonwealth legend Michaela Breeze in the women’s 58kg category on Saturday, who won gold in both 2002 and 2006 but finished as the silver medallist in the heavier 63kg class four years ago, while Welsh team-mate Christie Williams, in the same class, is trained by Breeze and goes up against her mentor.

OTHER SPORT: In netball, Australia remain the world’s number one netball nation, but New Zealand and England are close behind and the English team spent much of May touring Australia and playing the country’s state teams in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

The absence of England captain Pamela Cookey through injury may prove a big factor on their performances, and today they meet meet Australia without her in their second group game.

One of the disciplines taking place is the men’s 200m butterfly, and all eyes will be on Chad le Clos, as he aims to progress to this evening’s final.

Plus, Pool B in the netball continues at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre with one of the key matches, as Australia and England clash in a meeting between two of the favourites for gold.

The mixed team triathlon relay takes place at Strathclyde Country Park as day three of the Games continues.

This is the first time the mixed event has been part of the Commonwealth Games, and the discipline features teams of two men and two women, each racing over a shorter distance than a full triathlon.

Much of the attention will be on the English line-up, which is expected to feature Olympic medallists Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, along with Jodie Stimpson, who has proven herself to be one of the leading contenders in the ITU World Series this year.

Following the team triathlon event, the fast and frenetic action continues at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome with the latest track cycling finals.

Australia’s Anna Meares, who is both the Olympic and Commonwealth track cycling sprint champion, will almost certainly feature in one of this afternoon’s semi-finals as she attempts to defend her title, while England’s Jess Varnish, who finished fourth in the recent World Championships, could also be in contention.

There is also action from the shooting competitions as the men’s skeet finals and women’s 10m air rifle finals take place.

BBC One’s live coverage of the evening session includes all the latest swimming finals, which take place at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow.

The semi-finals in three events – the men’s 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke, and women’s 50m butterfly – are scheduled in the pool, along with seven finals, as the swimming timetable reaches the halfway point.

The men’s finals are the Para-Sports 200m freestyle S14, 100m breaststroke and 200m butterfly, with the women’s being the 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m breaststroke and 4x200m freestyle relay.

Plus, updates and reports on a variety of sports on day three of the Games, which has seen the start of the rugby sevens tournament and the conclusion of the rhythmic gymnastics and judo.

The track cycling continues at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, with the main attraction being the qualifiers and quarter-finals of the women’s sprint, in which Anna Meares of Australia is likely to feature prominently, ahead of the semi-finals later this afternoon.

the rugby sevens gets under way this morning at Ibrox with the opening pool matches, featuring 16 teams aiming to book their places in the quarter-finals, with matches including New Zealand v Canada, Wales v Malaysia and England v Sri Lanka.

Dan Walker introduces this evening’s live BBC Three coverage from Ibrox in Glasgow where the pool matches conclude on the opening day of the rugby sevens tournament.

There is an extra interest in the sevens this year, with the sport preparing to make its Olympic debut in two years’ time in Brazil, although the usual suspects are still expected to be challenging for medals, with New Zealand, Australia and England among the favourites.

The top two nations in each pool will progress to the quarter-finals, and this evening’s matches include New Zealand v Barbados, Samoa v Wales, Canada v Scotland and England v Australia, plus there is action from the netball as Trinidad and Tobago take on Wales.
