As the nation takes in another busy summer of sport, listeners of BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 5 live will get the chance to enjoy the first ever BBC Sport Prom live from London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, July 20.
Hosted by BBC sports presenter Gabby Logan, this special concert combines classical favourites that recall great sporting moments with much-loved memorable TV sport theme tunes.
Sporting celebrities will be selecting their favourite classical items and the audience will able to relive unforgettable sporting moments on screens in the iconic hall.
Rebecca Miller will conduct the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus and entertain audiences with classical works including Mozart’s A Musical Joke – Presto, Josef Strauss’ Sport Polka and John Williams’ Summon the Heroes.
These will be played alongside well-known modern day favourites such as the themes for Match of the Day, Test Match Special and Wimbledon.
The line-up of sporting greats taking part in the concert, discussing the music that inspired their careers, will be 1980 Olympic and European figure skating champion Robin Cousins, former English cricketer and TV personality Phil Tufnell, London 2012 Olympic rowing champion Anna Watkins and former London Wasps and Scotland rugby player Kenny Logan.
Sandwiched between the World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Wimbledon as part of a huge summer of sport, listen to unlikely sound of TV sport and the BBC Proms collide on Sunday, July 20, live on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 5 live.
The event will be simulcast live on BBC Radio 3 during Afternoon on 3 with Verity Sharp and also on BBC Radio 5 live with Eleanor Oldroyd presenting the special programme, with both stations starting their coverage at 10.30am.
In addition to covering the concert, 5 live will also welcome a host of sporting guests for more insights into how music has inspired sports stars to achieve their goals, with various guests joining Oldroyd in the studio.
BBC Sport Prom forms part of the 2014 season of the BBC Proms, the world’s greatest classical music festival, which runs from July 18 to September 13.
