BBC One will screen a documentary following sprint cyclist Victoria Pendleton as she prepares for the 2012 London Olympics.
‘Victoria Pendleton: Cycling’s Golden Girl’ will be shown in prime-time on Wednesday 18th July, and offers a unique insight into the way an otherwise ordinary life has been consumed by the sacrifice and intensity required to win an Olympic event.
Pendleton, 30, is already an Olympic champion, having won gold in Beijing in 2008, but this new BBC film follows her on a bruising and intimate personal journey.
Brutally honest and revelatory on camera, Victoria Pendleton is one of the most compelling sportswomen in Britain.
Her personal journey is presented throughout the one-hour film, full of the extreme highs and lows that an Olympic champion experiences on their road to glory.
As one of Britain’s most accomplished female sprinters ever, Pendleton has won nine world titles, including a record six in the individual sprint competition, as well as the Olympic gold in the same discipline in 2008.
Victoria Pendleton: Cycling’s Golden Girl reveals how Victoria followed in her father’s footsteps to take up the sport and how defeat in Athens in 2004 turned to gold in Beijing four years later.
But despite reaching the pinnacle of her sport, she has found that falling in love, a loss of form and the ever-increasing pressure from her international rivals has threatened her dream of gold in London 2012.
The documentary forms part of the BBC’s extensive build-up programming ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, of which it will screen more than 2,500 hours of live coverage from July 27 to August 12.
