Golf fans in the UK will be able to watch live coverage of ‘The Match: Champions for Charity’ event via the CNN news channel this Sunday (24 May).
The special charity event at Florida’s Medalist Golf Club sees multiple Major champions Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson go head-to-head, paired alongside NFL legends Tom Brady and Peyton Manning respectively, to raise funds for Covid-19 relief efforts.
The two teams will face off in a team match play competition, in a four ball (Best Ball) format on the front nine and a modified alternate shot format on the back nine, where each player will tee off and then the team will play alternate shot from the selected drive.
Organisers and the golfers themselves will collectively make a charitable donation of $10 million. As part of the competitive play, there will also be a set of additional on-course challenges to raise additional charitable funds.
CNN International, which is available in the UK via BT TV, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media platforms, will broadcast complete coverage of the event to UK and international audiences, using the live pictures provided by US broadcaster Turner Sports/TNT.
The live action will feature unprecedented access with all players having open mics throughout the entire competition, including the capability to communicate directly with other golfers and the TNT commentary team.
Commentators for the event will include presenter Brian Anderson and analysts Trevor Immelman and Charles Barkley, with on-course reporters Amanda Balionis and Justin Thomas.
The Match: Champions for Charity follows last week’s TaylorMade Driving Relief event, which was televised in the UK on Sky Sports.
According to The Telegraph, it was presumed that Sky Sports would pick up the rights to show latest Woods/Mickelson showdown, having broadcast their previous big-money match-up in 2018.
However, negotiations over the UK rights to the event broke down, allowing the international news network to step in and make a rare foray into live sport. CNN is owned by US-based media giant WarnerMedia, which also owns Turner Sports.
Commenting on the event, WarnerMedia chairman Jeff Zucker said:
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unimaginable tragedy and heartbreak. We’re hopeful this event and platform will help raise meaningful funding for COVID-19 relief, while also providing a source of brief distraction and entertainment for all sports fans.”
UK viewers can watch The Match: Champions for Charity live on CNN from 8pm on Sunday, 24 May, which is available via BT TV channel 339, Sky 506, Virgin Media 607 and Freesat channel 207.
