BBC expands Scottish Women’s Premier League coverage

BBC Scotland has announced that it will broadcast a new weekly highlights programme dedicated to the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL).

The new series kicks off on Sunday, 4 April on the BBC Scotland channel and will feature the best of the action from Scottish women’s football’s top flight for the rest of the season.

Jane Lewis will present the highlights show, which will air under the BBC’s flagship Sportscene banner, in a primetime slot each Sunday. 

In addition to TV highlights, BBC Sport Scotland will continue to stream selected matches live online via BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport Scotland website, while Gaelic language channel BBC Alba will also broadcast selected live matches every week.

Regular SWPL coverage adds to BBC Scotland’s football portfolio which includes SPFL highlights and live Scottish Championship and Scottish Cup matches, while BBC Alba also shows live coverage of Scotland’s women’s international matches.

Commenting on the new highlights show, Tom Connor, BBC Scotland’s editor for sport, said:

“We’re excited to show the best of the Scottish Women’s Premier League as it comes to a dramatic conclusion and this weekly highlights package further underlines our commitment. It will complement the broad portfolio of football coverage for our audiences on television, radio and online.”

The 2020/21 SWPL season resumes over the Easter weekend having been temporarily suspended in January due to Scotland’s lockdown measures.

The first live matches to be broadcast by the BBC following the season’s resumption will be Hearts’ home clash against Rangers, live on the BBC Sport website on Sunday, 4 April, while later that same day BBC Alba will be screening Celtic against Glasgow City.
