New Zealand’s five Super Rugby teams battle it out in a new-look domestic competition – Super Rugby Aotearoa – with all matches live on Sky Sports in the UK and free-to-air highlights every week on S4C.
The Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders will play each other over 10 weeks, kicking off on June 13 with Highlanders against the Chiefs at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
With many All Blacks stars on show, including Beauden Barrett, Rieko Ioane and Dan Carter, this unique tournament, set up in amidst the coronavirus pandemic, promises to showcase the best of Southern Hemisphere rugby union.
The five teams will play each other home and away over 10 weeks, with two matches to be played every weekend, and new innovations such as replacements for sent-off players and Golden Point in extra-time being trialled.
The league’s points system remains the same the Super Rugby competition with four points awarded for a win, two points for a draw and bonus points for losing by seven points or less or by winning by three tries or more.
At the end of 10 rounds, the team on the most competition points will be crowned the inaugural Super Rugby Aotearoa champion.
Every match throughout the tournament will be broadcast exclusively live in the UK on Sky Sports, with matches kicking off at 8.05am on Saturdays and 4.35am on Sundays.
For those who don’t fancy the early starts, Sky Sports will screen full match replays throughout its daytime schedules.
In addition, free-to-air Welsh language broadcaster S4C has secured the rights to broadcast weekly free-to-air highlights of the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition, in agreement with Sky Sports.
The channel’s flagship Clwb Rygbi will show extended highlights from both matches per round on Sunday evenings, starting on 14 June at 10.00pm.
Commenting on S4C’s highlights deal, Sue Butler, S4C Sports Commissioner, said:
“While we wait for rugby to resume at home, we’re delighted to be showing the only rugby union being played on the planet at the moment. We hope that rugby fans will enjoy watching the New Zealand’s world class teams in action in this new and exciting competition.”
S4C’s highlights programme will also be available to watch on demand at S4C Clic following the broadcast.
