BBC Sport will continue to broadcast a raft of special football programmes this weekend (30-31 May) in the continued absence of the professional game in the UK due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the week it was confirmed that the Premier League season will resume on 17 June, Football Focus with Dan Walker and guests will get all the reaction to the news on Saturday lunchtime on BBC One.
This will be followed at 12.30pm by a special edition of the magazine programme looking at the making of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, three of South America’s greatest footballing superstars.
Filmed in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, childhood friends, coaches and teammates of the three legends reveal how they became the global footballing powerhouses they are today.
The special programme forms part of Messi Day on Saturday across BBC Sport platforms, which will include the chance to watch some of the 32-year-old’s best World Cup goals, a quiz and a column from Match of the Day host and former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker.
The last edition of World Cup Rewind follows on BBC One at 3pm (except for viewers in Wales), featuring five classic matches – headlined by the 1966 final when England faced West Germany in a bid to become champions for the first time.
Also featured is the 1994 quarter-final between the Netherlands and Brazil, the World Cup debut of 18-year-old Lionel Messi in 2006, Juventus strike duo Toto Schillaci and Roberto Baggio spearheading hosts Italy’s attack against Czechoslovakia in 1990, and outsiders Costa Rica looking to spring a surprise against Uruguay in 2014’s group of death.
In Match of the Day’s traditional Saturday night slot on BBC One, the latest MOTD Top 10 Podcast sees Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright discuss the ten greatest matches of the Premier League era.
Then on Sunday afternoon there will be a full replay of the incredible 2014 World Cup semi-final between Germany and hosts Brazil, via the Red Button and on the BBC Sport website.
Also this weekend, live football returns to BBC TV screens on Saturday lunchtime as the corporation’s Gaelic channel BBC Alba broadcasts live coverage of the Women’s Bundesliga clash between Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim, kicking off at 12pm.
Viewers in Wales can watch another MOTD Wales Classic – when Wales welcomed mighty Brazil for a memorable international friendly at Cardiff Arms Park in 1991 – on Saturday afternoon (also available nationwide on BBC iPlayer).
BBC Scotland will show three more memorable World Cup encounters featuring Scotland this weekend. After games from 1974, 1978, 1982 and 1986, the FIFA World Cup Rewind series will show the 1990 match with Sweden on Friday.
On Saturday, it will be the 1998 tournament opener against Brazil, with the women’s meeting with Argentina last summer the next day.
BBC Northern Ireland will also have classic football action on Sunday night in the latest episode of Sport Re-run, presented by Stephen Watson, featuring Northern Ireland’s memorable 1982 World Cup clash against Spain.
