BBC Sport has confirmed that it will carry live free-to-air coverage of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship during the 2019/20 season.
All 14 races from season six of the electric racing series will be available to watch live and free-to-air across BBC online platforms – BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website –
Selected races will also be available to watch on TV via the BBC Red Button, while the Marrakesh E-Prix on 29 February and the Rome E-Prix on 4 April will be broadcast live on the BBC network TV, either on BBC One or BBC Two.
The new season starts with the opening race weekend in Diriyah on 22-23 November, with the season-opening races both live on BBC iPlayer, BBC Red Button and BBC Sport website from 11.30am each day.
Formula E will race in 12 cities crossing five continents next season, with events in Santiago, Mexico City, Sanya, Paris, Seoul, Jakarta, Berlin, New York City and the season finale in London all also available live across BBC platforms.
On retaining the BBC’s involvement with the series for the 2019/20 season, Jerome Hiquet, Formula E’s chief marketing officer, said:
“We want the ABB FIA Formula E Championship to be accessible to the widest possible audience and with five British drivers on the grid, Formula E fans in the UK will need to choose who they are getting behind when racing returns to London in July next summer.
“The British contingent may outnumber the other famous names in the field, but they face stiff competition with the arrival of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, as well as the current F2 champion Nyck De Vries choosing to join Formula E for the start of the new season.
“With 22 drivers separated by less than one second in pre-season testing, it is anyone’s guess who will come out on top in the first race on Friday next week. That is what makes Formula E so special to watch. Tune in to find out for yourself who the winner will be.”
Formula E made its debut on the BBC last season after previous stints on ITV4 and Channel 5 in its first four seasons.
The Hong Kong E-Prix was shown live on BBC Two during the 2018/19 season, with the early morning race attracting more than half a million viewers across all linear and digital platforms.
Alongside the BBC’s coverage, all Formula E events this season will also be broadcast on Eurosport, with selected races live and free-to-air on sister-channel Quest.
