The BBC has extended its TV highlights deal with the European Tour ensuring coverage of one of the biggest events in the international golf calendar, the Ryder Cup, remains free to air until 2022.
The 2020 contest in the US, held at Whistling Straits and the 2022 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone in Italy will be covered via TV highlights, live radio commentary and clips on the BBC Sport website, keeping fans across all the action.
In addition to the Ryder Cup, the BBC has also retained television highlights of the BMW PGA Championship and Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open.
It will also show highlights of the season finale to the European Tour, the DP World Tour Championship Dubai, until 2022.
On securing a new TV highlights deal with the European Tour, Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said:
“We are pleased that our audiences can continue to enjoy such a special event as the Ryder Cup, bringing the tournament to the widest possible audience.”
The new European Tour deal sits alongside the BBC’s existing coverage of The Open, for which it will continue to show daily primetime highlights until at least 2021, as well as highlights of the Women’s British Open, a deal which also runs through to 2021.
Rufus Hack, the European Tour’s Chief Content Officer, added:
“The Ryder Cup is one of global sport’s most watched events and this extension to our long term relationship with the BBC means viewers in the UK will be able to continue to follow it across the BBC.
“We’re delighted viewers can also follow three of our Rolex Series events, including our season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.”
Sky Sports retained the rights to exclusively broadcast live coverage of European Tour events and the Ryder Cup through to 2022, in a deal announced during the 2018 edition of the biennial contest between Europe and the United States.
