Jose Mourinho’s Blues bounced back from their shock FA Cup exit to League One Bradford by defeatingPremier League rivals Liverpool over two legs to book their place in the League Cup’s Wembley showpiece.
Chelsea also remain firmly in contention for both the Premier League and Champions League, but having not secured any silverware since making his return to Stamford Bridge in 2013, the always confident Mourinho will be desperate to get that trophy-winning feeling back.
The ‘Special One’ will, however, be wary of Mauricio Pochettino and his Harry Kane-inspired Tottenham side. Kane, who has already broken the 20-goal barrier for the season, netted twice as Spurs sensationally defeated Chelsea 5-3 at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day.
Chelsea stars Eden Hazard and Diego Costa as well as new £26m arrival Juan Cuadrado will be out to ensure there is no repeat of that disastrous day at the Lane.
The last time Tottenham, who edged past Sheffield United in the semi-finals, got their hands on any silverware was back in 2008, although they will be buoyed by the fact that win came against Chelsea in the same competition.
The League Cup Final is traditionally the first major cup showpiece of the English football season and first arrived at Wembley in 1967, when the format was altered from a two-legged affair to a final at a neutral venue.
Wembley’s first final was a truly historic one with third division Queens Park Rangers causing one of the great League Cup upsets as they came back from 2-0 down to defeat holders West Bromwich Albion 3-2.
The most recent threatened an upset when Champion’s League outfit Manchester City trailed to relegation threatened Sunderland, however, the soon to be crowned Premier League champions stormed back and second half goals from Toure, Nasri and Navas secured victory for The Citizens.
This season’s showpiece will see a repeat of the same final seven years ago, though Juande Ramos’ Tottenham side defeated Chelsea that day after after extra time, but who will be victorious this year?

To celebrate the first domestic final of the season, Sky Sports will have a day of live programming from Wembley Stadium with Sunday Supplement at 8.00am, followed by Goals on Sunday with Ben Shephard and Chris Kamara at 9.30am, with both shows enjoying the backdrop of the home of English football.
Simon Thomas, who took over from Shephard as Sky Sports’ Capital One Cup host this season, will present his first League Cup final for the channel as it brings live and exclusive coverage from Wembley with its 90-minute build-up show beginning at 2.30pm, with kick-off at 4.00pm.
He will be joined in the studio by past League Cup winners Thierry Henry and Jamie Redknapp, alongside Glenn Hoddle to share their insight and knowledge with viewers at the home of English football, as they scrutinise all the key moments of what looks set to be a fascinating cup final.
Match commentary comes from Martin Tyler and Alan Smith, with Guy Havord and Patrick Davison reporting throughout the afternoon from the Wembley touchline.
