Sunday afternoons will never be the same for Welsh sports fans as S4C launches Clwb on Sunday, September 7.
Clwb is a new five-hour feast of sport that will bring together the best of S4C’s sports coverage to Welsh-language viewers every Sunday, featuring live matches and action, highlights packages from a raft of different sports and a platform for sports opinion and analysis.
Kicking off on Sunday, September 7, Clwb will air on the channel throughout the rugby union and football season, showcasing live Guinness Pro12 rugby, live football from the Welsh Premier League, international cycling, motorsport, athletics and many other sports from Wales and beyond.
Dylan Ebenezer (pictured above) will be the main presenter of the new programme, keeping us updated with all the latest news and scores from across the UK and beyond, including the latest news from the English Premier League as the stories unfold.
Alongside a plethora of top sport and analysis, supporters and viewers will be given plenty of opportunity to voice their opinions too with Clwb’s Twitter and text round-ups.
Various guests will be welcomed into to the Clwb studio in Caernarfon to give their views on the issues, sports, teams, performers and players the people of Wales love and hate, support and challenge.
The new Sunday afternoon sports service will be supported by a new S4C bilingual sport website via s4c.co.uk.
S4C’s Director of Content, Dafydd Rhys says: “In Wales, we have a passion for sport and our country is a breeding ground for world-class performers.
“The public in Wales know that sport forms an important part of our provision as a channel and Clwb will be a fantastic development of our service which will offer more to the audience.
“The service will give a prominent place to our traditional sports, such as rugby and football, but alongside these, the service will give a platform to sports which are growing in their popularity.
“Cycling is an excellent example of a sport which is growing all the time and will be featured regularly on Clwb, and there will be plenty of room too for more established Welsh sports such as athletics, rallying, swimming and gymnastics.”
Llion Iwan, S4C Commissioner for Sport and Factual Programmes says: “We have brought together a production team of the highest quality to provide a highly attractive sports package.
“We know that the service will attract and reach new viewers, together with those who already watch our current, highly popular sports programmes.
“Clwb will be the place to go for all your Welsh sporting action on Sunday afternoons.”
Rondo Media will produce the service from their studio in Caernarfon, but a variety of production companies and broadcasters will produce individual programmes under the Clwb umbrella, including S4C’s existing flagship brands such as Sgorio, Ralio+ and Clwb Rygbi.
Live football and rugby union will be at the core of Clwb with live action from the Welsh Premier League and Guinness Pro12 coming to viewers on most weekends.
A new signing over the summer months to S4C’s rugby team is Gareth Charles, already a familiar to rugby fans as part of the on-air team on BBC Cymru Wales programmes.
Charles’ contribution to the team is one of the many changes to S4C’s rugby coverage this year, in a new slot at 3.45pm on Sunday afternoon as part of Clwb, and he joins a line-up which includes Gareth Roberts as the main presenter, former Wales captain Gwyn Jones and reporter Dot Davies, as well as other contributors.
In addition, S4C will also broadcast highlights of the French Top 14 rugby championship on Clwb, with some of Wales’ top rugby players who ply their trade in the French Top 14 – and the weekly feats of Jamie Roberts, Leigh Halfpenny, Mike Phillips, Dan Lydiate, Jonathan Davies, Luke Charteris and co – all now featuring regularly on S4C.
Live coverage and highlights from Welsh Premier League football will remain on S4C’s flagship show Sgorio, which returns September 7 as part Clwb, with Nicky John presenting coverage of Rhyl v Aberystwyth at 1.00pm, with programme also featuring highlights from other games in the Welsh Premier League.
Each edition of Clwb will conclude with a full round up of the afternoon’s sport on S4C, including a re-cap of the day’s main news and results.
