More skiing medals are at stake up in the mountains with high British hopes for more success as the Winter Paralympics continues into day three on Channel 4.
It promises to be another dramatic early morning at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Centre with high British interest once again in the Alpine Skiing events.
Paralympics GB’s first medalist of the Sochi Games returns to action today as Jade Etherington, who celebrated her 23rd birthday over the weekend, competes in the women’s super-G.
She will be aiming to repeat her silver medal-winning exploits, while fellow British skier Kelly Gallagher will want to get herself back into podium contention after her sixth place finish on Saturday.
Both will be keenly aware, however, of the threat of Slovakian athlete Henrieta Farkasova, who beat them both to gold in the downhill on day one.
In the sit-skiing super-G event, Anna Turney, who crashed out of her downhill run on day one, will be determined to put in a confidence-boosting performance having recovered from the knock she sustained on Saturday.
Her German rival Anna Schaffelhuber was impressive during Saturday’s downhill event to take gold, no doubt buoyed by the sight of her rival, the Austrian Claudia Loesch, spilling off the track and out of contention.
With the lack of snowfall and the existing patches melting all the time, the conditions on the Sochi slopes are deteriorating fast and are becoming a major concern for athletes.
But it remains good for smarter skiers who can adjust their approaches accordingly as well as take advantage of others’ misfortunes.
After their opening-day defeat against Canada, Great Britain followed up with two impressive win against Sweden and South Korea on Sunday.
They play Slovakia on Monday, who will no doubt prove a tougher proposition, having been unbeaten following wins against the United States, China and Finland.
Aileen Neilson’s charges will want to get a decent result ahead of Tuesday’s gruelling double-header, meeting Finland first, followed by the Norwegians.
This forthcoming triple of matches could well prove crucial as the British team aims to book a place in Saturday’s semi-finals.
In Cross Country skiing, Paralympic champion Nils-Erik Ulset will start today’s men’s 20km classic event as the big favourite.
However, the Canadian Mark Arendz will be hoping to be in among the front runners, while the young Ukrainian Ihor Reptyukh has been in ominous form leading up to the Games.
Look out too for local favourite Nikolay Polukhin, perhaps better known as a biathlete, but still a force to be reckoned with in the distance races, having won a silver on day one in the men’s 7.5km visually-impaired event.
For the first time on British television, para-sports fans will be able to enjoy rolling live coverage of a Winter Paralympic Games and Channel 4 will be providing the most comprehensive TV output of the event in its history, with more than 50 hours of live action over the ten days of competition.

The third day of events in Sochi starts with a mixture of alpine skiing and cross-country skiing on Channel 4.
Live coverage begins at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort where three gold medals will be awarded in the women’s Super-G.
Great Britain’s Kelly Gallagher and Jade Etherington are in action in the first event of the day up of the slopes – the Women’s Super-G Visually Impaired.
They are followed by Anna Turney in the Women’s Super-G Sitting on a day when three gold medals will be claimed at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort.
A further four gold medals will be decided in the cross-country skiing at the Laura Biathlon & Ski Complex, with the standing and visually impaired categories in the men’s 20km classic and women’s 15km classic events.

Channel 4’s lunchtime coverage in Sochi is dominated by Wheelchair Curling as Great Britain take on Slovakia.
ParalympicsGB’s wheelchair curling team got back to winning ways with a dramatic 6-4 victory against Sweden in the first of their two matches on day two.
Aileen Neilson’s side bounced back from their opening day defeat to Canada to win both their matches on day two, including a tense match that was decided on the final stone.
They now face Slovakia in their fourth match of the Paralympic round-robin phase so far.
Plus, there’s a look at the best action from the morning session in Sochi where a range of Alpine Skiing and Cross Country events took place.
