
ITV4 will broadcast a new four-part documentary series looking back over the last four decades of sports coverage on ITV, featuring some of the greatest sporting triumphs as well as a range of classic clips from the archives.
Ned Boulting has been digging through network’s vast and varied sporting archives to look at some of the weird and wonderful sport and characters that have appeared on ITV since the 1970s.
This nostalgic trip down ITV’s sporting memory lane will feature a variety of clips, presenting an affectionate decade-by-decade tribute to the characters who made their mark on the world stage in front of millions of TV viewers, and to those who were the faces of sports programmes on ITV, including legendary World Of Sport presenter Dickie Davies and Indoor League host Fred Trueman.

The first show takes a look at ice barrel jumping and the Calgary stampede, as well as some of the wackier events like the Evel Knievel Roadshow at Wembley Stadium and the North American lumberjacking championships.
The show also looks at The Indoor League – a pub sports competition that made household names of Leighton Rees, Willie Thorne and John Virgo – hosted by the great Fred Trueman, and produced and devised by the late Sid Waddell for Yorkshire Television.
Plus, big named grapplers like Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks and Kendo Nagasaki from the world of wrestling will feature.

Episode 2 – World of Sport: 1980s Monday 17th September – 9pm-10pm – ITV4The second show in the series looks back at some of the great sporting moments captured by ITV Sport during the 1980s.
This was the era of the first televised nine dart finish, and the first 147 snooker break, both of which were televised on ITV.
Some of the decade’s big names include Daley Thompson and Mike Tyson.

Episode 3 – World of Sport: 1990s Monday 24th September – 9pm-10pm – ITV4Continuing the series that delves into the ITV sport archive with the focus this week on the 1990s.
Highlights include Benn v Eubank, Euro 96, and Saint and Greavsie, as well as Manchester United’s dramatic Champions League triumph at the Nou Camp and three Rugby World Cups.
Episode 4 – World of Sport: 2000s Monday 1st October – 9pm-10pm – ITV4
In the last of the series, there is a look through ITV’s sporting archives at the first decade of the 21st century.
Highlights include England’s Rugby World Cup victory in 2003, Champions League triumphs for Liverpool and Manchester United, and some of the boxing icons of the era such as Calzaghe, Khan and Froch in action.
