BBC & ITV confirm 2014 World Cup last 16 match picks

The BBC and ITV have agreed the division of live games for the Round of 16 stage at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Played over four consecutive days from June 28 to July 1, both broadcasters will screen four second round matches each exclusively live, with BBC having first, third, sixth and eighth pick and ITV second, fourth, fifth and seventh choice.

The BBC’s first choice pick is the fascinating clash between tournament hosts Brazil and fellow South Americans Chile on Saturday teatime to be played in Belo Horizonte.

Neymar has inspired the hosts so far, scoring four goals during the five-time World Cup winners campaign so far, in which they have won two and drawn one of their three game, scoring a total of seven goals in the process.

Chile have beaten Australia and 2010 champions Spain on their way to the last 16 and should pose a signifcant threat to the host nation’s dream of World Cup glory.

BBC Sport will also feature France, Argentina and Belgium’s second round ties live, all of which will be shown on BBC One and BBC One HD.

ITV’s four live matches kicks off on Saturday evening with Group C winners Colombia against Group D runners up Uruguay, who will be without striker Luis Suarez following his controversial four month ban from the sport.

The commercial broadcaster will also screen both of Sunday’s games as Netherlands take on Mexico and Group D winners Costa Rica face Greece, as well as Monday’s late kick off featuring Germany against Algeria.

Following the Round of 16, ITV will have first pick of the quarter finals on July 4-5, while the BBC has first choice of the semi-finals to be played on July 8-9.

The FIFA World Cup Final, to be staged at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on July 13, will as always be broadcast live on both BBC One and ITV, while the 3rd place play-off the day before will be shown, as in 2010, by ITV.
