S4C has confirmed it will show live free-to-air Welsh language coverage of every match of Wales’s qualifying campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Wales face Belgium, Czech Republic, Belarus and Estonia in their qualifying group and will be hoping to reach the World Cup finals for the first time since 1958.
The campaign begins on Wednesday, 24 March with an away match against Belgium, currently ranked number one in the FIFA world rankings.
S4C’s Sgorio Rhyngwladol will have coverage of each and every match on TV and online via S4C Clic.
In addition, the friendly match between Wales and Mexico at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, 27 March, will also be shown live on S4C.
Commenting on the deal, Sue Butler, S4C Sports Commissioner, said:
“This is an exciting period for the national team in their aim to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. We are delighted to once again to have live coverage of every Wales game on S4C. Let’s hope we can make it through to Qatar.”
As in the previous two qualifying campaigns for major tournaments, the Welsh language broadcaster has secured the rights to live coverage of Wales’ matches via an agreement with UK rights holders Sky Sports.
The pay-TV broadcaster will show live coverage of every match from the European Qualifers for the 2022 World Cup, except for England’s games which will be shown on ITV.
It is expected that BBC Wales, BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Scotland will continue to broadcast free-to-air highlights of its respective nations qualifying matches throughout the 2022 World Cup campaign.
Dylan Ebenezer, presenter of S4C’s Sgorio, added:
“2021 is going to be a massive year for Wales. As well as the small matter of the European Championships, the team will be playing all of their World Cup 2022 qualifying matches.
“Once again, all eight matches have been scheduled within an eight month period, and although it’s a very tough group, the team’s recent performances have given us real hope that we can reach the biggest stage.
“Although there will be no Red Wall following the team for a while, supporters can follow every step of the campaign with Sgorio.”
