Gallagher Premiership Restart: Channel 5 confirms live games

Following confirmation of the resumption of the 2019/20 Gallagher Premiership season in August, Channel 5 has confirmed its schedule of live matches for the remainder of the season.

The broadcaster had four of its five allotted live free-to-air matches still to broadcast before the coronavirus pandemic suspended the campaign in March.

Four new matches have now been selected and will broadcast over four consecutive Saturday afternoons on Channel 5 and online via My5, presented by Mark Durden-Smith and David Flatman.

The matches selected to be shown on free-to-air start on Saturday, 15 August, when current Premiership leaders Exeter Chiefs host Steve Borthwick’s Leicester Tigers at Sandy Park.

The following week sees London Irish host Northampton Saints at Twickenham Stoop, then Sale Sharks play Bristol Bears at the AJ Bell Stadium on 29 August.

Channel 5’s final live match of the season also comes from Twickenham Stoop as Harlequins play host to Bath on 5 September.

Along with live free-to-air coverage on Channel 5, all four of these matches will also be simulcast on BT Sport, who will broadcast live coverage of every behind closed doors match for the remainder of the season.

Channel 5 is three years into a four-year deal to broadcast Premiership Rugby on terrestrial television, which includes weekly primetime highlights and five live matches per season.

Last season’s live games on Channel 5 gained a combined TV audience of more than 2.6 million while the match between Harlequins and Leicester Tigers earlier this season was watched by a peak audience of 710,000.
