Sochi’s Paralympic Winter Games have roared into life and five more medals are up for grabs on the second day of competition.
Great Britain is already on the medals table after Jade Etherington secured ParalympicsGB’s first medal of the 2014 Games on the opening day in Sochi.
She took an amazing silver in the visually impaired women’s downhill to become Britain’s first female alpine skiing Paralympic medallist.
Britain’s only representative in Alpine events on day two sees sit-skier Mick Brennan makes his debut for ParalympicsGB in the men’s super-G, where arly risers shall be rewarded with some high-speed thrills on the slopes.
Brennan, and Iraq war veteran, was due to make his Paralympics bow in Saturday’s downhill, but pulled out of the event after describing the course as “scary”.
He will be up against the Japanese pair of Taiki Morii and Takeshi Suzuki, who are the ones to watch for gold having secured a host of medals between them in major competitions.
In the standing super-G event, plenty of hype surrounds the Aussie Mitch Gourley, but the young Austrian Markus Salcher began the Games in fine style with victory in the downhill on day one, taking gold ahead of Russia’s Alexey Bugaev and Frenchman Vincent Gauthier-Manuel.
In Wheelchair Curling, Great Britain play two matches on Sunday as they look to bounce back after defeat to world champions Canada in their opening game.
South Korea’s progress has been impressive since their international debut in 2004 and after claiming silvers at Vancouver 2010 and the World Championships in 2012, skip Hak Sung Kim is aiming for gold in his 10th year at the helm.
For the British team, the highly experienced skip Aileen Neilson will be hoping to guide her team back to winning ways.
Cross Country competitions begin at the Games and plenty of attention will be on the women’s 12km sitting event where American Tatyana McFadden will be aiming to add to her three Paralympic gold medals, all of which she won at London 2012.
In the men’s 15km sitting event, Canadian veteran Brian McKeever will be the one to watch having taken gold in three cross-country distances on home soil in Vancouver four years ago.
McKeever has a total of 10 Paralympic medals to his name, including seven gold, but will be keeping an anxious eye on his closest rival, the Russian home favourite Roman Petushkov, who took the silver in Vancouver.
Ice Sledge Hockey has already made its impact on viewers so far and the Canadians are in ominous form having beaten Sweden 10-1 on day one.
The United States will be hoping to build on their useful 5-1 opener against the Italians as they bid to become the first ice sledge hockey team to land consecutive golds.
For the first time on British television, para-sports fans will be able to enjoy rolling live coverage of a Winter Paralympic Games and Channel 4 will be providing the most comprehensive TV output of the event in its history, with more than 50 hours of live action over the ten days of competition.

The second day of events in Sochi begins with a mixture of live wheelchair curling, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing action.
Great Britain’s Wheelchair Curling team take on Sweden, who took bronze in Vancouver four years ago, in their first of two matches today.
In the men’s Alpine Skiing Super-G Sitting, former army sergeant and Iraq war veteran Mick Brennan is Great Britain’s sole representative in the event at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort in Krasnaya Polyana.
Cross Country competition begins with the Women’s 12km Sitting where American Tatyana McFadden returns to the country of her birth with the aim of adding gold in the event to the three summer Paralympic titles she won at London 2012.

In Wheelchair Curling, Great Britain face South Korea in their second game of the day and the four Scots of the squad are aiming to go one better than the silver medal achieved in Turin eight years ago.
Having won a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Turin, the British team were disappointed not to earn a medal in Vancouver four years ago.
They continue their quest for a medal in Sochi with their third match at the Ice Cube Curling Centre as they face South Korea.
There is also action from the ice sledge hockey competition as the United States take on South Korea.
