The biggest names in golf will battle it out at North Carolina’s Pinehurst Resort this week in the 114th US Open and all four days of competition will be shown live on Sky Sports.
Playing host to the second of the year’s four majors, Pinehurst welcomes the tournament’s reigning champion Justin Rose as the Englishman gets set to defend the title he won at Merion Golf Club in dramatic style 12 months ago.
He claimed his maiden major title with a two-stroke victory over six-time runner-up Phil Mickelson and Jason Day, becoming the first Englishman to taste success in the tournament since Tony Jacklin in 1970.
The South African-born player did it with style, too. He led by one going into the 18th and hit a superb four-iron approach to set up a comfortable finish.
Home favourite and four-time major champion Mickelson needed a birdie to force a play-off, but could only manage a bogey five.
Rose finished on +1, two shots clear of the field on a gripping final day and became the first Englishman to win a major since Nick Faldo at the Masters in 1996.
A host of top players will have their hearts set on taking Rose’s crown, with star-studded field for this year’s tournament featuring the likes of 2011 champion Rory McIlroy and two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson.
Tiger Woods misses out after back surgery earlier in the year, so the American will forego the chance of adding a fourth US Open title and a 15th major to his bursting trophy cabinet.
There still promises to be a strong field out on the course in North Carolina – which hosts the championship for the first time since 2005 – including Masters champion Bubba Watson and current world number one Adam Scott.
Rory McIlroy will also be among the elite talent looking to lift the coveted trophy and he looks to win his third major championship.
The Northern Irishman won the US Open in 2011 and has been in resurgent form of late, picking up a top-10 finish at the Masters, and will be among the favourites this year.
With tournament organisers USGA famed for setting up testing and challenging U.S. Open courses, the cut has taken many scalps over the years and the Pinehurst course will no doubt be the same.

The second major of the golf season is upon us and Sky Sports will bring you the best live coverage of the 2014 US Open.
Sky Sports 4 is the home for all the action from start to finish and the channel will whet the appetite on the morning of the opening day by showing the official films from the last six US Opens – the first, 2008, starts at 8.00am on Thursday and they will play out every hour, finishing with last year’s event at 1.00pm.
Then at 2.00pm, ten hours of live day one coverage from Pinehurst gets under way with David Livingstone anchoring Sky Sports’ comprehensive coverage from a studio overlooking the course.
Analysis and debate throughout each day’s play comes from multiple U.S. Open runner-up Colin Montgomerie, Butch Harmon and European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, while Ewen Murray, Bruce Critchley and Rob Lee lead the commentary team.
On-course reports and interviews throughout the tournament will come from Howard Clark, Tim Barter and Sarah Stirk.
Sky Sports’ live weekend coverage starts at 5.00pm on both Saturday and Sunday, totalling more than 35 hours of output across the four days, with play concluding each night at around midnight.
Golf fans will have plenty of chances to catch up on any of the action with regular highlights shows during the four days, starting 7.00am and again at 12noon, while Sky Sports News have updates from Pinehurst with regular reports and interviews from around the course.
