Match Of The Day 2 will move permanently to BBC One on Sunday nights for the start of the 2012/13 season, switching channels from BBC Two.
With an increased number of Premier League games now played on a Sunday, the BBC has decided to switch its Sunday edition of the popular Premier League highlights show to BBC One in order to ‘bring all of the weekend’s football action to its audiences via the nation’s favourite channel’.
Saturday’s edition of Match Of The Day, fronted by Gary Lineker, will continue to air in its regular slot. The show regularly attracts up to 4m viewers.
Match of the Day 2, which has a more light-hearted tone compared to the Saturday version, will now be shown on BBC One every sunday night during the season at 10.25pm.
Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One, said: “As a huge fan of Match Of The Day I’m thrilled that MOTD2 is moving to a regular home on BBC One.
“The audience response to the BBC’s coverage of Euro 2012 has been fantastic, meaning that this is the perfect moment to make this move.”
MOTD2 has been aired since the beginning of the 2004/5 season after the BBC regained the rights to screen Premier League highlights from ITV.
Adrian Chiles hosted the programme for the first six years, with present host Colin Murray taking over in 2010.
The BBC will screen Premier League highlights until at least 2016 after securing an extension to its current deal.
