The fabled Festival of Speed returns to the historic grounds of Goodwood House in West Sussex, and Sky Sports and ITV will have full coverage of the 2012 event.
As the world’s greatest celebration of car culture, this year’s event will be even bigger and better than ever with a record number of Formula 1 teams and drivers in attendance, as well as the usual mix of impressive classic vehicles, planes and bikes.
Featuring a host of adrenaline-fuelled attractions, this mecca of motorsport has long been regarded as one of the must-see events of the motorsport calendar, with Sky Sports screening three hours of live coverage over the course of the weekend, and there will be special review on ITV the following week.
Founded by the Lord March in 1993 and now in its 20th year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed continues to build its reputation as one of the must-see events for a vast number British motorsport fans, all set amongst the historic backdrop of the Goodwood estate.
New car models will make their world debuts, pioneering technology will be unleashed and drivers from around the globe will push their machines of choice to the limit in a bid to beat the competition and set the fastest time in Sunday’s showpiece hill-climb.
From Bernd Rosemeyer and Mike Hawthorn, to Emerson Fittipaldi and Lewis Hamilton, Mike Hailwood and Valentino Rossi, to Henri Toivonen and Colin McRae, this year’s ‘Young Guns – Born to Win’ theme will also celebrate the stars whose talent and thirst for speed made an immediate impact on the world of motorsport.
The 2012 festival will celebrate the careers of these overnight sensations, some of whom fulfilled their full promise and others who shone briefly before fading, but all of whom secured their own special place in motor sport’s rich tapestry.
In addition to the famous hillclimb event, there is plenty happening elsewhere across the vast grounds of Goodwood Park.
World Rally Championship teams take to the tracks through the forest in a mesmerising display of car control, while world-class action sports athletes perform gravity-defying tricks on a variety of two-wheeled machines in the Action Sports Area.
In the air, dramatic air displays will thrill spectators, while down below in Goodwood Park, music plays while families picnic in the stunning grounds of Goodwood House.
The fastest drivers on the planet, including Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, will drive in some of the most sophisticated racing cars and display their skill and showmanship to the thousands of fans lining the hillclimb route.

Sky Sports will dedicated more airtime to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed than ever before, with all the action being screened in high-definition and stunning 3D for the very first time.
An extra programme has been added to the schedules on Saturday evening, which will review the weekend’s activities over the first two days with particular emphasis on the vast exhibitions of classic cars and motorbikes, as well as a host the adrenaline-fuelled activities from across the site.
On Sunday there will be two hours of live coverage, featuring interviews with some of the biggest names in world motorsport, and live action from the traditional hillclimb event, where drivers from around the world attempt to beat the clock and set the fastest time
It is the third consectutive time that Sky has covered the event, and Keith Huewen returns to present all the action from a roof-top studio overlooking the famous Goodwood House.
He will be joined by a variety of special guests over the two days, including Tony Jardine, and Natalie Pinkham will be providing roving reports from around the Goodwood grounds.
Commentary on the famous hillclimb will come from Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft.
A new innovation for this year’s festival is that it will be the first motorsport event to be broadcast in 3D on Sky’s dedicated 3D channel.
Both the review show and the live Sunday coverage will be simulcast on Sky 3D, which is available to viewers with a 3D-ready TV and the relevant Sky HD TV subscription.

ITV will once again broadcast a special one-hour review programme from this year’s festival.
Steve Rider and Amanda Stretton will present all the highlights from motorsport’s annual garden party in the grounds of Goodwood House.
Stars and cars from Formula 1, sportscar racing, motorcycling, touring cars and rallying gather in a feast of motoring glitterati.
The review show will premiere on ITV4 in a prime-time slot on Tuesday, July 10 at 8pm, and will also be screened in high-definition on ITV4 HD.
It will also be screened a week later on ITV1.
