Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympics Watch: Day 6 on C4 & More4

It’s crunch time for Great Britain’s wheelchair curlers on day six as they aim to book their places in the semi-finals live on Channel 4 and More4.

As we reach the business end of the curling round robin phase, Great Britain are in the thick of an increasingly tight battle for a place in the semi-finals.

The all-Scottish team’s final two matches are against two of their closest rivals for a last-four spot. First up is a morning match against the in-form USA, with Aileen Neilson’s side needing to bounce back from Day Five’s harrowing 11-2 defeat to Russia. 

A few hours later, GB will take on China in a contest that is set to decide their Sochi fate.

There was more medal success for ParalympicsGB on Wednesday as snow queen Jade Etherington picked up her third medal of the Games in the women’s slalom.

With GB’s women having won four medals in total in Alpine Skiing so far, it’s the turn of the men up in the mountains today as three British skiers aim to make their mark on the slopes.

Schoolboy James Whitley has been skiing since he was four years old and will get his first taste of the slopes a Winter Paralympics as he goes in the standing category.

The 16-year-old competed in his first major international event last year at the IPC World Championships in Spain, where he ranked 16th in the giant slalom.

He finished the 2012-13 season by winning his first senior medal, a bronze in giant slalom at Chamrousse, France, and says he will not be overawed by facing more experienced opponents in Sochi.

The sitting slalom event will feature two ParalympicsGB contenders, including 19-year old Ben Sneesby.

The teenager is considered an outsider for medals on his Paralympics debut, but he’ll be aiming to spring a surprise.

Also going in the slalom is former soldier Mick Brennan, who acquitted himself well in the Super Combined and the Super-G events.

There are few Winter Games fixtures that invoke as much excitement as a North American ice duel and the latest installment between the United States and Canada will be certainly be one of the highlights of Sochi 2014.  

Canada looked imperious in the group stages but defending champions USA will be smarting from their shock defeat to Russia last time out.

The two nations also have scores to settle from the Winter Olympics, when Canada beat the United States in men’s and women’s ice hockey on their way to a double gold medal haul.

In the other semi-final, host nation Russia, a side formed just three and a half years ago and who werenot supposed to be gold medal contenders in their first Paralympic Winter Games, face Vancouver bronze medalists Norway.

For the first time on British television, para-sports fans will be able to enjoy rolling live coverage of a Winter Paralympic Games and Channel 4 will be providing the most comprehensive TV output of the event in its history, with more than 50 hours of live action over the ten days of competition.

Wheelchair Curling dominates Channel 4’s early morning coverage from Sochi as Great Britain continue their quest for a semi-final place.

Competition for places in the medal matches reaches a crucial stage as Great Britain face the United States in their penultimate round robin match.

Commentators Bob Kelly and Gill Keith are in Sochi’s Ice Cube Curling Centre as the action unfolds.

Coverage switches to More4 for an hour at 8.00am while the The Morning Line airs over on Channel 4.

More4’s first visit to Sochi today sees in the conclusion of Great Britain’s crucial match against the USA in the Wheelchair Curling.

Coverage returns to Channel 4 after The Morning Line at 9.00am.

It’s semi-final day in the Ice Sledge Hockey and Channel 4 has live coverage of hosts Russia against Norway.

A unexpected victory against the United States in the group phase has left Russians daring to dream that its Paralympic side might help ease the nation’s ice hockey wounds following a disappointing Winter Olympics.

Commentary from the Shayba Arena comes from John Rawling and current Great Britain captain Ian Warner.

ALPINE SKIING & WHEELCHAIR CURLING  Presenters: Jonathan Edwards & Ade Adepitan

The first run of the men’s slalom events take place as the presenting baton passes onto Jonathan Edwards and Ade Adepitan.

16-year-old schoolboy James Whitley competes for Great Britain in the standing category, while Mick Brennan and Ben Sheesby will enter the sitting event.

Great Britain begin their last group game in the Wheelchair Curling round-robin against China.

Coverage continues for the rest of the day over on More4 from 12.30pm.
