Ugo Monye joins BT Sport as rugby pundit

Former England star Ugo Monye has been unveiled as BT Sport’s latest signing following the announcement of his retirement from rugby union.

The Harlequins wing, who will quit the game at the end of this season, has signed up to join a star-studded team, alongside the likes of Lawrence Dallaglio and Brian O’Driscoll.

Monye’s main role will be as a rugby expert for BT Sport’s coverage of the Aviva Premiership and European tournaments. He will also appear on weekly rugby show Rugby Tonight.

After beginning his professional career in 2002, Monye became a key member of the England Sevens team and made his full England debut in 2008, scoring his first try against Scotland in the Six Nations tournament in 2009.

His career went from strength to strength and he was selected for the Lions XV in the 2009 tour of South Africa, where he scored five tries to become the highest Lions try scorer of the tour.

Monye, 31, said: “I’m delighted to be joining BT Sport. The star-studded team which is currently in place boasts a wealth of experience and a vast amount of knowledge.

“I’ve had great fun working with them throughout this season and, over the next few years, I’m looking forward to learning from them and giving my own insight across the Aviva, 7’s and ERCC.

“BT have shown their intent in the last week by extending the domestic rights to 2021 and I am honoured to be a part of that journey moving forward.”

BT Sport is the exclusive home of the Aviva Premiership until the end of the 2020/21 campaign and the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

The channel’s rugby team includes former internationals Ben Kay, Matt Dawson, Austin Healey, Lawrence Dallaglio, Martin Bayfield and Brian O’Driscoll, presenters Craig Doyle and Sarra Elgan and commentators Nick Mullins and Alastair Eykyn.

Grant Best, BT’s executive director of programming and creative said: “With rugby union at the forefront of BT Sport’s success, we are delighted Ugo Monye has decided to join our presenting team as his career begins a new chapter.

“With his vast experience of the Aviva Premiership, European Champions Cup and the international rugby landscape he will bring a huge amount of knowledge to our coverage.”
