England make the trip north of the border for the first time in 15 years to take ‘auld enemy’ Scotland on Tuesday evening and ITV, STV and Sky Sports will be screening live coverage of this highly-anticipated international friendly at Celtic Park.
Following the thrilling 3-2 victory for Roy Hodgson’s England at Wembley last August, this November’s return match sees Gordon Strachan’s side aiming to enact revenge in Glasgow.
The showpiece fixture, which will be played at Celtic Park due to the renovation of Hampden Park following this summer’s Commonwealth Games, will be both sides’ final match of the year and comes a few days after their latest matches as part of the campaign to qualify for Euro 2016, with both sides making strong starts.
This will be the first battle on Scottish soil between these two proud footballing nations since their thrilling Euro 2000 play-off first leg encounter 15 years ago at Hampden Park.
Two goals from Paul Scholes secured an victory for Kevin Keegan’s England back in 1999 but, as last August’s friendly at Wembley illustrated, Scotland are a rejuvenated and buoyant side capable of giving Roy Hodgson’s men a run for their money.
It will also be England’s first visit to Scotland since 1999, when two goals from Paul Scholes gave Kevin Keegan’s side a 2-0 victory at Hampden Park in a Euro 2000 qualifying play-off.
Scotland won the second leg 1-0 at Wembley, Don Hutchison’s goal giving them their most recent win over England, but it was not enough to see them into the tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands, in which Keegan’s side were knocked out in the group stages.
The two nations share close footballing ties, with the 0-0 draw in November 1872 recorded as the first official match between two football associations.
The confirmed 2014 contest, coming 142 years after the first meeting, will be the 112th time England and Scotland have faced one another and the records remain close, with England having won 46 to Scotland’s 41.
Their only other meeting in the last 25 years came during the group stage of Euro 96, hosted by England, with an Alan Shearer header and a memorable individual effort from Paul Gascoigne coming either side of a David Seaman penalty save to give the eventual semi-finalists a 2-0 win on home soil.
With Hampden Park undergoing renovation work, the game at Celtic Park will be the first between the two sides not played in the national stadium since 1904.
Notably, the match will take place exactly two months after the Scottish public vote in a referendum to determine whether the country should become independent from the United Kingdom, but the focus will hopefully be firmly placed on the football in what should be a special night at Celtic Park.
Gordon Strachan has steered the Scots to an impressive start as they bid for Euro 2016 qualification with the narrow victory at home to Georgia and a fantastic draw in Poland leaving them level on points with world champions Germany in Group B.
Arguably, their greatest performance of the campaign came in Dortmund where only a Thomas Muller double denied the visitors a share of the spoils, after Ikechi Anya’s solo effort had levelled proceedings.
In the year since Strachan took control of the national team, the change has been more than apparent.
They have improved, mainly due to manager’s methods and philosophy being allowed to flourish, and the Scots are confident they can qualify for a first major international tournament since 1998 – after they claim a victory against the old enemy.
England will hope to extend the run of victories which has seen them claim a 100 per cent start to their qualification campaign.
Hodgson’s side will travel to Glasgow on the back of Slovenia’s visit to Wembley and, barring a shock result, a fourth consecutive qualifying victory which would leave them sat nicely at the top of Group E.
Hodgson’s men will look to build on their performance against Scotland in August 2013, where goals from Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck cancelled out James Morrison and Kenny Miller’s individual efforts, which had twice given the Scots the lead – all before Rickie Lambert’s debut header sent Wembley into raptures.
A special night is in store at Celtic Park on Tuesday, November 18, as two of international football’s greatest rivals square off in the latest chapter of this unique sporting rivalry.
Football fans will have the rare choice of three channels to pick from to watch this fascinating encounter, with free-to-air coverage on ITV and STV, while Sky Sports will also have the whole match live.

ITV Sport will screen all the action from Scotland’s international friendly against England from Celtic Park as international football’s oldest rivalry is renewed on Tuesday night.
Adrian Chiles presents live coverage on ITV and ITV HD with build-up to the match starting at 7.30pm ahead of an 8.00pm kick-off in Glasgow as the home side hope that their resurgent team can gain revenge on the visitors for their 3-2 defeat at Wembley.
Joining him for expert analysis and comment in the studio will be ITV regulars in former England defender Lee Dixon and ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle, alongside Rangers manager and former Scotland striker Ally McCoist, who makes a one-off return to ITV having previously been one of the channel’s main pundits between 1999 and 2006.
Match commentary will be provided by Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend, while pitchside reports and interviews will be conducted by Gabriel Clarke.
In addition to its live coverage, ITV will screen a one-hour highlights show in the evening, also presented by Adrian Chiles, including highlights of some of the night’s other big friendly internationals, with analysis in the studio from Lee Dixon, Glenn Hoddle and former Scotland striker John Collins.

STV will screen its own dedicated live coverage of Scotland’s friendly against England for viewers north of the border.
With the match falling under ITV’s deal with the FA to broadcast away England friendlies, Scottish fans will be treated to the now rare privilege of being able to watch their national team in action on free-to-air television for the first time since September 2013.
Raman Bhardwaj will present STV’s coverage of this highly-anticipated clash and he will be joined in the studio by three familiar faces from Scottish football.
Current Scotland and Hull City ace Robert Snodgrass, Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes and former England captain Terry Butcher will be in the studio as part of STV’s match build-up ahead of the game, which will be on air from 7.30pm, as well as for half-time and extensive post-match analysis.
Derek Rae and Gary McAllister provide commentary on the game, while Sheelagh McLaren provides reports direct from the pitchside at Parkhead.
Alongside live coverage, STV will broadcast the main ITV network highlights show of the match following Scotland Tonight at 11.25pm.
