Premier League Retro: Sky Sports to show classic matches

Premier League fans will be able to relive classic matches in their entirety over the coming weeks as Sky Sports digs out some of the most memorable top flight clashes from its archives.
Starting with one of the most memorable matches of all time – Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 win over Newcastle at Anfield in 1996 – the new Premier League Retro series will re-show classic matches in full, as covered by Sky Sports at the time.
There will also be blogs running with ‘live’ commentary and in-game clips on the Sky Sports website and app – skysports.com/football.
Premier League Retro will fill some of the gaps left in the Sky Sports schedules by the suspension of professional football for the foreseeable future, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
In the first goal-filled classic match, Roy Evans’ Liverpool welcomed Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United to Anfield for what was a crucial clash in the race for the 1995/96 Premier League title.
Friday, 3 April, marks the 24th anniversary of a classic encounter between the two sides, which can be relived in full on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event from 7.30pm.
Nearly a quarter of a century may have passed, but the memories of that night still burn brightly.
Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers’ were in urgent need of victory having seen a 12-point lead over Manchester United replaced by a three-point deficit, while third-placed Liverpool harboured title ambitions of their own.
Veteran Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler says it remains the greatest game he has ever covered for the broadcaster.
Speaking to the Sky Sports website ahead of the first Premier League Retro, Tyler said:
“I do often get asked what is the best game I have ever commentated on. Getting on for a quarter of century after it happened, I have had no reason to change my mind.
“It was at Anfield – Liverpool 4, Newcastle United 3 – the 1996 version. Both clubs were going for the Premier League title, though neither would win it.
“The deciding seventh goal came from “Collymore closing in – and Liverpool led in stoppage time”. Kevin Keegan, the former Liverpool star, then in charge of Newcastle, slumped over the advertising hoardings, an iconic image of an amazing evening.
“Everything we love about football bottled in up in one extraordinary match.”
More classic matches from the Sky Sports Premier League archives will follow over the next few weeks, including Manchester United’s clash against Tottenham at Old Trafford on the final day of the 1998/99 Premier League season.
Victory for Alex Ferguson’s side secured them the title and kept them on track for the Premier League/FA Cup and Champions League treble, which they would go on to secure a few days later.
