The BBC has picked up the rights to broadcast live coverage of the 2019 Copa Libertadores final, the showpiece match in South American club football.
Brazilian side Flamengo play Argentina’s River Plate on Saturday, 23 November and will be broadcast live on BBC Two, as well as online via BBC iPlayer, from 7.45pm.
The match, which will be played at the Estadio Monumental in Lima, Peru, will kick off at 8pm UK time.
Mark Chapman will present the BBC’s live coverage with expert analysis from Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva. Match commentary will be led by Mark Scott.
It is the first time that South America’s premier club football competition has been broadcast live on the BBC and on a major terrestrial channel. The two-legged 2018 final was broadcast live on BT Sport and FreeSports.
The Copa Libertadores began with 47 teams back in January, with defending champions River Plate overcoming fellow Argentines and fierce rivals Boca Juniors in the semi-finals, while Flamengo beat fellow Brazilian side Gremio.
River are chasing a third Copa Libertadores title in five years and will be hoping for a repeat of their memorable win against arch rivals Boca Juniors in last year’s final, when a goal from Colombian playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero proved decisive.
Flamengo, meanwhile, are aiming to lift the trophy for the first time since 1981, when they were inspired by the legendary Zico. The star of the current side is Gabriel Barbosa, a temperamental but prolific striker known as Gabigol.
The winner of the Copa Libertadores final in Lima will qualify for the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar, featuring UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool. The tournament takes place from 11-22 December.
