BBC to show England v New Zealand Test in Denver

England’s mid-season Test match against New Zealand in the United States will be broadcast live on the BBC on Saturday, 23 June.

The match will be staged at the Sports Authority Field Stadium in Denver, Colorado, kicking off at 9.10pm UK time, with full live and uninterrupted coverage on BBC Two from 9pm to 11.30pm.

Tanya Arnold will present the BBC’s coverage, which will also be streamed live on the BBC Sport website/app and BBC iPlayer, with match commentary from Dave Woods and former Great Britain coach Brian Noble.

Last year’s mid-season England Test against Samoa in Sydney was not shown on UK television, as the Rugby Football League trialled a subscription streaming service for that fixture.

The deal with the BBC for the Denver Test ensures the corporation will broadcast live free-to-air coverage of all four England rugby league Tests this year, having previously secured the rights to show the 2018 autumn series against New Zealand.

The showdown Denver will act as important preparation for the three-match Test series against the Kiwis in October and November, which will be held in Hull, Liverpool and Leeds.

Rugby Football League’s interim chief executive, Ralph Rimmer, said:

“The Denver Test between England and New Zealand is a momentous occasion for Rugby League as the first International Test match to be staged in North America for over 18 years and we’re delighted that the BBC have chosen to broadcast the game live so supporters here in the UK will be able to tune in.

“BBC have always been great supporters of Rugby League, from the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup right through to International Series and beyond and it’s fantastic that all four England men’s test matches to be staged in 2018 will be shown live to a large terrestrial audience. We look forward to continuing our partnership with BBC, in what is a hugely important period for England Rugby League as we head towards the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.”

Philip Bernie, head of BBC TV Sport, added:

“We are delighted to have secured the live rights for the match in Denver. With the Rugby League World Cup set to be staged in North America in 2025 and the expansion of the game with clubs like Toronto Wolfpack, it will be interesting to see an international match played in the USA.

“With BBC Sport having the live TV rights to the forthcoming Test series in the autumn against New Zealand, we will be able to see how England are placed as they look to build towards the 2021 World Cup following that agonisingly close defeat in last year’s World Cup final.”
