BT Sport to show 2018 UEFA football finals for free online

BT Sport has confirmed its free live coverage of this season’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League finals will be made available to the majority of viewers via online platforms only.

The broadcaster will live stream both showpiece finals for free online via YouTube, the BT Sport app and the BT Sport website via, though free-to-air coverage will not be shown on a linear TV channel, as it was in 2016 and 2017 when both matches were broadcast on BT Sport Showcase.

The UEFA Europa League final will also be made available online to non-BT Sport subscribers, which will see Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid take on Marseille in Lyon on Wednesday, 16 May.

The following week on Saturday, 26 May, will see Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s men travel to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev and pit their wits against European giants and 12-time winners of the European Cup, Real Madrid.

Zinedine Zidane’s men will be looking to win it for the third year in a row, with Liverpool hoping to win the competition for the sixth time.

BT’s announcement to make its free coverage of both UEFA finals available via online platforms only follows its recent move to wind down the offerings on its free-to-air BT Sport Showcase TV channel, which has broadcast selected live matches to terrestrial audiences, with little fanfare, since BT Sport took over the rights from ITV and Sky in 2015.

Beyond the 2017/18 season, BT is yet to officially confirm whether its Showcase channel will continue on Freeview in its current form, as BT will no longer be obliged to broadcast matches on its free-to-air platform once its new three-year contract with UEFA for Champions League and Europa League football starts next season.

However, BT Sport has promised under the new deal to provide element of free Champions League and Europa League coverage via social media under its new three-year deal with UEFA, including in-game clips, weekly highlights, UEFA’s magazine show and live coverage of both finals online.

Pete Oliver, managing director marketing and sales, consumer, said:

“To have Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League final is fantastic. We have always said that we want to make top quality sport available to more people and so once again we will be making the UEFA Champions League Final and the UEFA Europa League Final available to all to watch online for free.

“This season we have shown some absolutely amazing games and have had some of our biggest games to date with our UEFA Champions League viewing figures up by 47 per cent this season. The final is set to be a classic and we can’t wait to bring it to football fans across the UK.”

As in the previous two years, the matches will be available for free to watch on YouTube in 4K UHD, the BT Sport app and and available for BTTV subscribers on BT Sport 2 and BT Sport 4K UHD.

BT Sport subscribers will also be able to enjoy innovative 360 highlights on the app throughout the game.

YouTube’s Head of Sport in EMEA, Tomos Grace, added:

“Football is by far the most popular sport on YouTube and it doesn’t get more premium than the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League finals. We are delighted to be partnering for the third year running with BT Sport to make these games available live to YouTube users across all of our platforms.”
