Former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton’s return to the ring against Andres Gutierrez will be shown exclusively live and free-to-air on Channel 5 this July.
The eliminator for the WBC world featherweight title will take place at Belfast’s SSE Arena on Saturday, 29 July, in what will be the Northern Irishman’s first fight since his loss to Leo Santa Cruz in a WBA title contest in Las Vegas last January, as well as his return to fighting in his home city after a two-year absence.
Frampton, who has been involved in some of British boxing’s biggest fights of recent times, including his two epic encounters with Mexico’s three-weight world champion Leo Santa Cruz, also returns to terrestrial television for the first time since 2015, when ITV televised his two world title fights against Chris Avalos and Alejandro Gonzalez Jr.
His opponent on 28 July, Mexico’s Andres Gutierrez, is a former WBC Silver champion at super bantamweight and regarded as one of the top featherweights in the world.
The man known as ‘Jaguarcito’ is ranked in the top-ten with the WBC and on closer inspection his record reveals that his only loss was a highly controversial majority points decision to former unified world champion Christian Mijares in June 2016.
The top-ten ranked Gutierrez is only twenty-three years old and has amassed an impressive 35 wins from 37 fights, with one draw and one defeat over the course of his eight-year professional career.
Confirmation of Channel 5 coverage of the fight was made by Frampton’s promoters Cyclone Promotions, which is headed by former champion boxer Barry McGuigan.
Commenting on his upcoming WBC title eliminator, Frampton said:
“I’m delighted to be boxing at home. I believe that I perform best when I fight in Belfast and it was important for me to give the home fans another big Belfast fight.
“Gutierrez is one of the best in the world at my weight and this is the kind of test I wanted. He comes forward and is aggressive so I believe it’s going to be a great fight.
Former world champion Barry McGuigan, of Cyclone Promotions, added:
“This is a fantastic fight. It’s brilliant that Carl is having a home fight and he is in against a very dangerous opponent in Andres Gutierrez. Carl is at his best when he has a live opponent who is hunting him down and on July 29th at the SSE Arena Belfast that is exactly what is going to happen.
“Stylistically it has all the makings of a very entertaining contest and I believe Carl will put on a world-class display in front of a packed house, it’s going to be a cracking fight!”
The scene is set for an action-packed encounter between two of the best featherweights in the world on 29 July at the SSE Arena Belfast and the full fight will be broadcast live on Channel 5, with selected undercard bouts expected to be shown live on sister channel Spike.
Channel 5 has a rolling contract with Cyclone Promotions for live coverage of selected fight nights free-to-air throughout the year. Live boxing forms part of Channel 5’s growing sports portfolio, which also includes England cricket and EFL football highlights, live Formula E motor racing, MotoGP highlights and, from September, live coverage and weekly highlights of Aviva Premiership Rugby.
