UEFA Europa League Final 2017 live on BT Sport

BT Sport has exclusive live coverage of the 2017 UEFA Europa League Final on May 24 as Ajax take on Manchester United at the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

Both teams have enjoyed great success in continental competition, with the Dutch giants having lifted the European Cup four times to United’s three, the last of which came in 2008 in Russia.

It is hard to underestimate the importance of winning the 2017 Europa League Final for Jose Mourinho’s ambition to restore Manchester United as a European powerhouse.

With this season’s winners guaranteed a return to next season’s Champions League, a win over Ajax in Stockholm could earn him the platform to build the squad capable of glory-hunting as a standard pursuit.

But defeat could herald more crisis-management at English football’s most successful club as United have already fallen short of earning a top four spot in the Premier League when they kick off in Sweden.

Their opponents Ajax made an unconvincing passage to the final as Lyon, 4-1 losers in the first leg of their semi-final, came within a goal of taking the semi-final tie into extra time before the Dutch, Uefa Cup winners in 1992, held on for a 5-4 aggregate victory.

Ajax’s last day challenge for the Eredivisie title is in sharp contrast to Mourinho’s tired-looking side languishing 20 points behind his former club Chelsea heading into the European final.

The injury absences of Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who is denied a hero’s return in his native Sweden – and the late semi-final dismissal of Eric Bailly leave United far from full strength as they aim to add to February’s League Cup victory in Stockholm.

The Wembley win over Southampton was Mourinho’s 11th in 13 major finals, a stunning record he will be desperate to extend.

The decorated Portuguese also boasts a 100% success rate in his three European finals – the first of which, Porto’s Uefa Cup extra-time success over Celtic in 2003, which was followed the following season by the resounding Champions League victory over Monaco.

The Red Devils will be hoping to lift a fifth major European title as they look to lay similarly strong foundations for greater glory.
