Sky Sports to broadcast first live cricket in Ultra HD

Sky Sports will broadcast live cricket in Ultra High-Definition for the first time this summer when England take on South Africa in their Test series across July and August.

In a world first for Test cricket, Sky Q customers in the UK will be able to watch every ball of England’s four-Test series against South Africa in Ultra HD, which has a picture quality with four times greater clarity than standard HD.

The multi camera coverage, available with Sky Q, will be supported by stunning Ultra HD graphics, Hawkeye and enhanced statistical offerings.

The four Test matches against South Africa form part of a busy summer of live cricket on Sky Sports, which includes all England internationals, ICC Champions Trophy, NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One Day Cup matches.

Sky’s forthcoming Ultra HD cricket coverage adds to its existing Premier League and Formula 1 broadcasts in the new broadcast format, which are available to watch via the red button on Sky Q, while rivals BT Sport launched the first 4K Ultra HD channel of its kind in Europe in the summer of 2015.

Bryan Henderson, Sky Sports Head of Cricket, commented: “With Ultra HD, customers can enjoy the  four Test matches, with four times better picture quality and four times greater clarity.

“It is a first for Sky Sports and we can’t wait to bring you closer to the action, excitement and drama that the South Africa Test series will deliver this summer.”

Sky Sports has broadcast cricket since 1990 and the addition of Ultra HD viewing adds to a list of innovations that Sky has introduced over the years including stump microphones, interactivity, hi-motion replays, Hot Spot analysis, 3D, Sky Cart and Hawkeye.

Sky’s cricket coverage is part of the broadcaster’s bumper summer of sport, including live action from the ICC Champions Trophy, the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand and The Open.
