Wrestling is to return to ITV for a regular series for the first time in nearly 30 years after completing a deal with IMPACT Wrestling.
ITV Studios Entertainment Manchester has teamed up with Anthem Sports and Entertainment Corp, the parent company of IMPACT Wrestling, to bring World of Sport Wrestling back for a 10-part series to air later this year.
The commission follows a one-off-special which marked the return of the sport to ITV after almost 30 year gap on New Year’s Eve 2016, which was watched more than one million viewers.
Three decades after the original World of Sport Wrestling ended, and legendary stars such as Big Daddy, Mick McManus and Rollerball Rocco left British screens, this new series will feature the very best of today’s wrestlers from the current UK wrestling scene.
They will compete in front of a live audience at the intimate Preston Guild Hall on Thursday 25th May and Friday 26th May, with tickets set to go on sale at 9am on Friday, April 7, via Ticketmaster and prestonguildhall.co.uk.
There will also be a launch event this Monday, March 27, at 2pm in Manchester, where the full details of the World of Sport live shows will be announced, including the roster.
Director of Entertainment, ITV Studios Manchester, Tom Mclennan said: “Britain’s wrestling scene is thriving and there has never been a better time to bring it back to ITV after a gap of 30 years.”
After rumours of discussions with a variety of wrestling companies, ITV has teamed with IMPACT, who recently celebrated their 15th anniversary by signing a new UK television deal of their own with Viacom-owned Spike channel.
Jeff Jarrett, Chief Creative Officer for IMPACT Wrestling, added: “The WOS brand is etched in professional wrestling tradition.
“My family’s lineage in the industry dates back 70-plus years, so I am honoured to revive the legacy of this historic British series.”
ITV Studios will co-produce the new 10-part World of Sport Wrestling series with Anthem.
